Two excellent chess kids

Updated: 15:25, 02/05/2023
(BGO) – Being talented and passionate about playing chess since childhood, Hoang Manh Hung (born in 2013) from Tan My Primary School and Pham Bao Toan (born in 2014) from Le Loi Primary School in Bac Giang city – two kids in Bac Giang's Chinese chess team - have continuously won prestigious medals at national tournaments.

Hung’s father is the head of the Chinese chess club in Tan My commune. Hung’s family owns a beverage shop with a chess board, so many people often come to play Chinese chess every day. Being taught by his father and watching others play chess, the boy fell in love with this sport.

In 2020, Bac Giang province hosted the National Youth Chinese Chess Championship. It was very difficult to find Bac Giang players to compete at the tournament at that time as the province's Chinese chess department had not been established.

Watching many chess games played by Hung at his family, Pham Xuan Quang, a Chinese chess coach of the provincial Center for Physical Training and Sports discovered that Hung had very good moves, if he was trained, his talent would develop well.

To prepare for this tournament, in addition to training at the center, in the summer, Hung's father took him to coach Pham Xuan Quang's house in Tan Yen district for further training. The first time competing in the national arena with no experience, Hoang Manh Hung excellently won gold medals in traditional chess individual and team, and a silver medal in U7 rapid chess team.

In 2021, the tournament was not held due to the Covid-19 outbreak. In 2022, Hung once again reaped the success when he won five medals, including one gold in rapid chess individual and four silvers in rapid chess team, blitz chess individual, blitz chess team and standard chess individual.

Currently, on weekday evenings, Hung and his teammates in the provincial Chinese chess team practice chess for 2-3 hours.

Right from the 1st grade, Pham Bao Toan excellently won the first prize in chess organized by Le Loi Primary School. In 2023, he was selected to compete at a city-level tournament and won the first prize. Although he studied and played chess from a young age, Toan also showed his talent for Chinese chess. Discovering Toan's talent, the provincial Center for Physical Training and Sports recruited him to the provincial Chinese chess team.

Unlike Hung, Toan has a very special style and tactics. His non-standard playing style makes it very difficult for the opponent to guess his moves. In many matches, Toan seemed to fail, but he suddenly turned the game around, "knocking out" the opponent.

Next July, Hung and Toan will participate in the National Youth Chinese Chess Championship held in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

In addition to the coach's tutoring, Toan downloaded the Chinese chess playing app to sharpen his skills and gain experience. In his spare time, Toan is often taken by his mother to Quang Minh swimming pool in Bac Giang city to play with members of Chinese chess clubs.

In 2022, at the National Youth Chinese Chess Championship held in the south central province of Khanh Hoa, with confidence and high determination, Toan excellently won four medals, including two gold medals in traditional chess individual and team, and two silver medals in rapid chess team and blitz chess team.

In order to improve professional quality and gain better results in high-class arenas, Hoang Manh Hung and Pham Bao Toan have often been called at open tournaments organized by many provinces and cities.

Recently, the duo were selected to compete at the National Team Chinese Chess Championship in Bac Giang city from April 3 to 12, to learn the expertise of renown players in the Chinese chess circle in Vietnam, thus helping them have more experiences in life and competition. Next July, Hung and Toan will participate in the National Youth Chinese Chess Championship held in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
