Vietnam Airlines to launch first direct flight to Italy next month

Updated: 09:57, 17/06/2025

Vietnam Airlines will launch a direct service between Hanoi and Milan in Italy on July 1 as part of plans to expand its European network.

It will initially operate three flights a week using wide-body Boeing 787 aircraft. It will be the first direct service to Italy by a Vietnamese carrier, with others currently requiring passengers to transit in Germany or France.

A Vietnam Airlines spokesperson said the carrier also plans to launch a direct service to Milan from HCMC after 2025.

Milan in northern Italy is the country’s second largest city by population after Rome.

Known for its fashion industry and historic architecture, the city draws millions of tourists, particularly in June-August. Italy is generally a popular destination for Vietnamese travelers.

Data from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism also shows that Italy is among the 10 fastest growing sources of visitors to Vietnam, with the number of arrivals from the country rising by 155% in 2024.

The launch of the direct air route is expected to boost tourism, especially as the two nations are negotiating a visa waiver for tour groups from Vietnam.

Vietnam Airlines currently flies on 106 routes including to 36 international destinations using a fleet of Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, A321 and A320neo aircraft. It also plans to launch or revive 15 international services this year.
