Today, banh mi are widely sold at food carts on nearly every street corner in Ho Chi Minh City and across the country. Beyond Viet Nam’s borders, this dish has also gained widespread popularity.
Describing the Vietnamese banh mi, CNN notes that the classic version includes pork, such as cha lua (Vietnamese-style pork roll), shredded pickled carrots, pickled daikon, coriander leaves, mayonnaise, and other ingredients.
“You can find variations with tofu and thinly sliced lemongrass chicken, too. The taste is crunchy, fresh, savoury and utterly delicious,” CNN remarked.
This is not the first time banh mi has been praised by international culinary writers. In 2023, CNN also included Vietnamese banh mi in its list of the world’s 24 best sandwiches.
Previously, CNN listed banh mi among the 50 must-try street foods in Asia.
In 2024, banh mi topped the list of the world’s 100 best sandwiches, as ranked by the globally renowned culinary site TasteAtlas. In September 2022, TasteAtlas experts and readers voted the Vietnamese banh mi into fourth place in the list of the world’s 50 best street foods.
Meanwhile, in 2021, French newspaper Le Monde also praised the Vietnamese banh mi, calling it a serious “rival” to the American hamburger.
