The awards celebrate the storytelling power of food imagery—capturing cultural rituals, community life, and the emotional ties surrounding food and drink.
This year’s competition drew nearly 10,000 entries from 70 countries and territories. The overall winner was “The Elderly having delicious food” by Xiaoling Li of China.
Dang Hoai Anh was the only Vietnamese photographer honoured in this year’s competition. His award-winning image showcases the traditional Vietnamese dish banh hoi—a delicately woven rice noodle cake popular in southern provinces such as Binh Thuan, Ben Tre, Nha Trang, and Binh Dinh.
The photo captures a craftsman lifting a tray of the steamed delicacy amid a gentle swirl of mist, enhanced by perfect lighting and composition. The result is both dreamlike and authentic, evoking nostalgia and warmth.
In its introduction, the award committee noted that banh hoi is typically served with scallion oil, roasted or grilled pork, and pig offal. The dish is a staple at celebrations, weddings, funerals, and religious ceremonies—an integral part of local Vietnamese culinary culture.
A total of 185 finalist images, including “Banh Hoi Cake,” will be exhibited in the UK from June 3 to September 7, offering international exposure and commercial opportunities for the photographers.
