Viet Nam leads Group A at 2025 AFF U19 Women’s Championship

Updated: 10:22, 13/06/2025

On June 11, the Viet Nam U19 Women’s team secured an emphatic 6-0 victory over Timor-Leste U19 in their second Group A match at the 2025 AFF U19 Women’s Championship, temporarily taking the top spot in the group with a perfect 6 points from two consecutive wins.

Facing an opponent considered to be of a lower level, head coach Okiyama Masahiko made several changes to the starting line-up, aiming to give young players an opportunity to play.

Viet Nam U19 Women’s team claims a dominant win over Timor-Leste U19.

Nevertheless, the Viet Nam U19 Women’s team demonstrated overwhelming superiority in both gameplay and technical quality.

From the very first minutes, the Japanese coach’s players applied continuous pressure and opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a well-placed header by Thuy Nga, following a precise cross from Nguyen Thi Quy.

In the 25th minute, Thuy Nga doubled the lead with a well-executed free kick after Quynh Anh was fouled just outside the penalty area.

The scoring did not stop there. In the 36th minute, Timor-Leste goalkeeper Elania inadvertently scored an own goal after a skilful cross from Le Thi Trang, increasing the score to 3-0.

In the second half, the one-sided match continued; in the 62nd minute, after a well-coordinated one-two pass, Quynh Anh finished with a diagonal shot to raise the score to 4-0.

In the 77th minute, Nguyen Thi Quy found the net with a clever free kick from the right flank. Before the match ended, Hoai Trinh was fouled in the penalty area and stepped up to convert the spot-kick, sealing the 6-0 victory.

Speaking after the match, coach Okiyama Masahiko said: “I’m very pleased with the players’ performance. We had thoroughly prepared with two different line-ups, and today provided an opportunity for some new faces to showcase their abilities. They have proven their progress and highlighted the effectiveness of youth development in Viet Nam.”

In the other Group A match, Myanmar U19 Women’s team also delivered a commanding 6-0 win over Laos. With this result, Viet Nam tops Group A with 6 points and a goal difference of +8. Myanmar and Laos each have 3 points, while Timor-Leste remains without a point after two rounds.

In Group B, Thailand U19 Women’s team has already booked a place in the semi-finals after a 7-1 win over Malaysia, while the match between Indonesia and Cambodia ended in a 1-1 draw.
