“GOm show” — Telling story of Vietnamese music through ceramics

Updated: 10:25, 16/06/2025

“GOm show” — a creative art performance where the sounds of Vietnamese ceramics are awakened and resound within the flow of contemporary art — is scheduled to premiere at the Ha Noi Opera House on June 28-29.

At a recent briefing held in Ha Noi, artist Dinh Anh Tuan shared about “GOm show” — an innovative musical art project inspired by ceramic culture.

The programme features many talented young artists.

The name of the show alludes to “ceramics” while also symbolising a journey back to Viet Nam’s traditional cultural roots.

“GOm show” blends indigenous music with a system of innovative instruments crafted from ceramics, terracotta, bamboo, and water. It was initiated and developed by the Dan Do ensemble.

The show also features ten young artists, all of whom are formally trained in traditional musical instruments, passionate, and creatively engaged in the performance.

According to artist Nguyen Duc Minh, unlike conventional music performances, “GOm show” does not have a narrator. Instead, it is the potter’s wheel and the evocative sounds of ceramic instruments such as jars, pots, and earthenware lids that guide the audience through the story.

By fusing folk instruments, innovative sound devices, and performative elements, “GOm show” delivers a one-of-a-kind musical experience — both raw and dreamlike.

“GOm show” not only marks a significant milestone in the artistic journey of the Dan Do group, but also represents a notable breakthrough in the flow of Vietnamese contemporary art.

It showcases creative music rooted in local culture, using a newly developed system of instruments made from ceramics and terracotta to produce new sounds.

Artist Dinh Anh Tuan noted that “GOm show” is not only intended for Vietnamese audiences but also aims to introduce indigenous music to international visitors.

Following its premiere, the show is expected to be performed regularly for both domestic and international audiences.
