Vietnam, US jointly study vaccine against African swine fever

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has suggested the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) transfer virus samples to Vietnam to study and produce vaccine against African swine fever (ASF) in the country.
The ministry made the suggestion during an ongoing working session with USDA experts from February 10 – 14.

Vietnam also sent 20 ASF virus samples in its 17 provinces to the US for vaccine research and production.
The Vietnamese side proposed the US should consider sending its technical experts to Vietnam or receiving Vietnamese experts to jointly produce vaccines against the virus in the two countries.
It also sought the US’s support in building a process to review vaccine quality after successful research.
US experts also informed that their vaccine against the ASF virus in China and Southeast Asian nations has proved effective.
Localities throughout the country have been active in taking concrete measures to prevent the spread of African swine fever (ASF).
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc urged for strong measures to cope with African swine fever (ASF) at an online conference with the ministries, agencies and localities concerned on March 4.
The Ministry of Health has affirmed that the African swine fever (ASF) is not infectious to humans and advised consumers against boycotting pork products that are safe, non-infected and processed hygienically.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Vietnam has pledged to help the country control the spread of African swine fever (ASF), that recently broke out in the northern provinces of Thai Binh and Hung Yen.
Given the complexity of African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks in neighboring country China, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has said that the disease is at high risk of entering Vietnam.
