Young man overcomes difficulties to win USA scholarship
BAC GIANG- Thanks to his good study results, passion for scientific research in line with the help of his teachers, encouragement of his family and his own efforts, the young man named Nguyen Van Duc born in Dai Son village, Minh Duc commune, Viet Yen township won a PhD full scholarship to a prestigious university in the US.
When we first met him, Duc was found calm and quiet but he became extraordinarily excited and passionate as talking about science. He excitedly shared us about his passion for scientific subjects and aspiration to master such academic knowledge.

The village student wished one day he could discover the stars and airplanes to bring human to the huge space. That is one of the reasons motivating him to pass the exam into the School of Aerospace Engineering (SAE), Hanoi National University with high scores. During his study process, this student reminded himself to study hard and make ceaseless efforts.
The studying environment at SAE gave Duc favourable conditions to develop his passion for scientific research.
Duc engaged and successfully implemented many projects such as researching on impacts of wind on a house or analysing how air flow affects the surface of an aircraft when it is flying.
Thanks to his ceaseless efforts, the young student won many scholarships and awards of the school and other units.
Duc graduated from the college in 2023 but he continues doing research at the laboratory. To date, he has conducted 5 research announcements on the prestigious international magazines and at national scientific conferences while he is completing some other researches.
After graduating from the college, Duc intended to study master programme in Vietnam but his teachers encouraged him to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in the US because they believed in their student’s capacity.
In early March, Duc received admission letters for PhD training in medical engineering from 5 universities in the US including University of Connecticut (UConn), New York University, Iowa State University of Science and Technology, Texas University and North Dakota State University. These are R1 universities (with the highest research activities in the US and quality study environment).

He decided to choose University of Connecticut (UConn), which is ranked as the best public university in New England and northeast region of the US. Apart from tuition fee exemption, Duc will receive an amount of nearly 28,000 USD (about 700 million VND) each year during 5 years studying at the university as a research assistant professor.
Duc said he has completed the procedures to fly to the US for study in August. Now he is studying about culture and customs of the host country and improving his English to adapt to a new environment. Besides, Duc is learning some subjects first to soon keep pace with the overseas study with a hope to participate in many scientific subjects and projects.
As a saying that “Travel broadens your mind”, this young man believed his journey to study overseas will help him to gain new knowledge to contribute to constructing his hometown and home country.
