3,200 children provided free congenital heart defect screening under “Heart for Kids” program

(BGO)- Bac Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics, the Vietnam Heart Fund of the Vietnam Television and the Military Industry - Telecommunications Group (Viettel) jointly held the voluntary program themed “Heart for Kids”, a free congenital heart defect screening programme for children under 16.

There are from 200 to 300 children in the province detected congenital heart disease annually, 150 of whom have to undergo surgeries.

After this 2 day-program, 3,224 children in the province were screened in which 178 children were detected suffering from heart defect and 55 children were advised for early intervention.

The cases detected congenital heart defect will be scheduled for surgery at Bac Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital with direct participation of the specialized doctors from Bac Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital and Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics. Each surgery costs from 50 to 80 million VND (2,100 to 3,400 USD) covered by medical insurance fund.

Children from poor and near poor households as well as policy beneficiary families will receive free surgery. 43 out of 55 child patients advised for early intervention requested for surgery support from the program.

Addressing the event, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Le Anh Duong highly appreciated this voluntary activity which helps to repair defect hearts, brings happiness to the families and saves the children ‘life.

He hoped Bac Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital would continue facilitating internists to regularly enrich their profession and access to further training courses in obstetric cardiology to improve the treatment techniques against more complicated heart defects while paying attention to investing modern facilities and equipment to serve surgery and treatment.

The “Heart for Kids” program has been organized by Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics, the Vietnam Heart Fund of VTV and Viettel in collaboration with the hospitals for 59 times over 11 provinces and cities nationwide during 11 years.

Thanks to this program, nearly 12,000 children were detected suffering from congenital heart defects. More than 5,000 child patients have been provided free surgeries who recovered to live like other normal kids.
