Bac Giang diversifies processed lychee products

Updated: 17:51, 29/06/2023

This year, the whole district has more than 17,300 hectares (up more than 1,600 hectares compared to 2022) with estimated output of 98,000 tonnes. In addition to fresh consumption, lychee is processed into many products, helping diversify local agricultural products.

This year, Luc Ngan district had more than 3,000 lychee drying kilns. As schedule, about 9,500 tonnes will be dried by coal furnances while 500 tonnes will be dried by electric kilns. Besides, about 3,200 tonnes of lychees will be put in cold storage and industrial processed.

Toan Cau Food Joint Stock Company plans to export 3,000 tonnes of products to European market and create 1,600 seasonal labours.

Apart from promoting fresh lychee harvest for domestic consumption and export, many households have recently operated the lychee drying kilns at full capacity.

For years, Nguyen Ngoc Lan in Phuong Chieu commune, Hung Yen city (Hung Yen province) has rented land in Tan Truong village, Thanh Hai commune (Luc Ngan district) to build a lychee drying facility with a capacity of 9 to 10 tonnes per day.

Lan said: "Thanks to good quality lychee in a bumper harvest season this year, the quality of the dried lychee is guaranteed. Because the kiln is located near the area of many lychee gardens so it is very convenient for the grower and buyer. I currently employ 14 people in many provinces to work in the facility. My products are sold out quickly”.

Family of Vi Thanh Luan in Hang Bong village, Hong Giang commune is one of the few households using a technological kiln (electrical drying) to dry lychees. Owning two kilns (total investment of 600 million VND) with a capacity of 12 tonnes per batch, Luan expected to dry about 200 tonnes of lychee this year.

At this time, Global Food Import-Export Joint Stock Company in Phuong Son commune is also increasing the purchase of lychee to process into juice, frozen and canned lychee products. In 2023, this enterprise plans to purchase more than 2,000 tonnes of raw lychees for processing.

In addition to the previous technologies and equipment, the Company invested more than 2 billion VND in atmospheric packaging technology which meets international standards and helps prolong the preservation period, improve the freshness of the processing products.

Some cooperatives in the district processed dishwashing liquid, floor cleaning, glass cleaning, wine from lychee together with lychee bread, lychee yogurt, lotus seed lychee tea and lychee cake. These products are widely preferred by consumers.

Besides purchasing lychee for sale at markets, many traders also collected fruits to supply to domestic fruit processing factories. Every day, dozens of tonnes of lychee grown by people in the lake area are supplied to processing factories and drying kilns outside the province.

Luc Ngan district defined to consume 78,300 tonnes of fresh lychee (35,000 tonnes for domestic market and 43,300 tonnes for export) this year.

As of June 23, there were 245 fixed lychee weighing points with the total consumed volume of 50,000 tonnes (accounting for over 50 percent of the plan). Of which, more than 22,000 tonnes were exported (21,800 tonnes to China, 390 tonnes to Cambodia, 51 tonnes to Japan, 19 tonnes to EU, 4 tonnes to the US and Australia).

Nguyen The Thi, Vice Chairman of Luc Ngan District People's Committee said most of lychee is sold fresh. A few are processed, canned, juiced and dried with output and quality which are disproportionate to the potential. .

According to the functional sector, processing capacity and output are still low. It is crucial to attract and issue mechanisms to encourage qualified investors in deep processing, diversifying products from lychee.
