Bac Giang maintains traditional markets, expands exports in 2024 lychee season
BAC GIANG – Though this year lychee crop is not as bumper as previous seasons, Bac Giang province has proactively prepared consumption promotion plan together with maintaining traditional markets, expanding new markets in order to increase the product value. Along with instructions to improve the quality of lychees, all levels, sectors and localities have launched activities to connect and bring local special fruit further.
These days, the early ripening lychee growing area with growing area code for export to Australia in Nam Dien village, Nam Duong commune (Luc Ngan district) is in the stage of fruit bearing. This year, lychee output is estimated at 15-16 tonnes of fruit. Although the output is not equal to last year, local farmers persistently apply caring techniques so the flower bearing area all bears a lot of fruits, promising high selling prices.

This year, Luc Ngan district maintains 103 lychee growing area codes for export, mostly in the communes of My An, Tan Moc, Nam Duong, Hong Giang and Giap Son.
Due to unfavorable weather condition, many lychee gardens do not bear fruit. This year the district expects to harvest about 50,000 tonnes of lychees, including 24,000 tonnes of early ripening lychees and the remaining of main season lychees.
In Phuc Hoa commune (Tan Yen district), lychee growers are happier this season because there are few places in the province having high fruit-bearing rate of over 70% and the expected output of about 15,000 tonnes. So far, many domestic and foreign businessmen have visited the garden and signed contracts to purchase products.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, this year the province's lychee output is estimated at about 100,000 tonnes (accounting for 50% compared to 2023).
The lychee areas are cultivated in line with safety procedures, the expected harvest time is from May 20 to July 30, of which early ripening lychee can be harvested from May 20 to June 15 and main lychee season starts from June 10.
According to Head of the Plant Protection Division Nguyen Van Toan, there is a good sign for this year's lychee season when many businesses have proactively contacted specialized agencies to find and sign long-term contracts with raw material areas for export.
For example, VIFOCO Import-Export Joint Stock Company (Bac Giang City) signed a cooperation agreement with Phuc Hoa commune (Tan Yen district) to committed to consume products in 2024 – 2028 period at a price of 35,000 VND per kg, 20% higher than the annual price.
Since early this season, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has organized 8 working sessions with businesses who came to survey raw material areas for export and prepared conditions for preliminary processing, packaging, preservation technology for export to different markets of United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Thailand...

In May, the Department of Industry and Trade organized an online trade conference with the Department of Trade and authorities of Yunnan and Guangxi provinces (China). This is a traditional market consuming a large amount of local lychees. Through the conference, the two sides had many exchanges and cooperated to join hands in consuming Bac Giang lychees.
In addition to the Chinese market, Bac Giang continues promoting and introducting local fruit to high-end markets such as the United States, Japan, Australia... through lychee purchasing businesses, on social network and e - commerce platforms.
Bac Giang lychee season is about to enter the main season. With proactive measures from production to consumption, Bac Giang lychee growers expect to have good fruit seasons and reach new markets.
