Bac Giang makes lychee national product
Improving product quality
Bac Giang province has grown more than 28,300 ha of lychee, the biggest area in the country with productivity of 180 - over 200,000 tonnes of fruit per year and revenue of over 5 trillion VND (216.7 million USD) (excluding utility cost).

To develop lychee become national product and improve its value, the Standing Board of the provincial Party Committee issued Resolution No.401 on April 3, 2019 about the agriculture development strategy in Bac Giang province to 2030 with the vision till 2035 which focused to build high quality lychee area meeting VietGAP and GlobalGAP standard and have 70 percent of lychees satisfying export standard.
To realize this policy and implement the Decision No.2153 on December 25, 2021 of the Chairman of provincial People’s Committee (PPC) to approve for the Project “Developing lychee become national product” in 2018 - 2020 period, the departments of Science and Technology (DoST), Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), People’s Committee in the districts of Luc Ngan and Tan Yen actively joined hands for implementation to improve the lychee quality, increase the cultivation area and its value.
The DoST consulted the PPC to execute five Scientific and Technology projects at provincial and national levels relating to lychee, typically Researching the actual situation and technical method to maintain and improve the soil nutrition to enhance productivity and stabilize lychee quality in Bac Giang province (Project); Applying Israeli Juran Company’s technology to preserve fresh lychee and other fruits for export.
The DARD built 16 lychee production models for Luc Ngan and Tan Yen districts, 30 hi-tech lychee production models with drip irrigation system, two lychee organic cultivation models.
The DoST collaborated to implement the Project in 15 ha of Luc Ngan and Tan Yen district, helping increase the productivity of Phuc Hoa early ripening lychee up to 15 - 20 percent, main season lychee of Luc Ngan district up to 30 - 35 percent. These models are operated and further expanded.
Actively promoting and expanding the market
So far, the VietGAP lychee growing area has hit 15,400 ha (up 2,400 ha against 2017 figure) with estimated output of 112,900 tonnes of fruits while GlobalGAP lychees have been grown in over 100 ha with productivity of about 1,000 tonnes.

The products are qualified to export to Japan, Australia, the US, EU, Singapore, China, Thailand and Canada among others.
If Bac Giang was granted 18 lychee growing area codes (GAC) to export to Japan in 2020. Now the province has 35 GAC covering over 269.4 ha with productivity of 2,000 tonnes of fruits.
Particularly, the province has 149 GAC for China with total area of nearly 15,900 ha and output of 95,000 tonnes. As schedule, 65 percent of this year lychee will be exported.
Vice Director of DoST Ngo Chi Vinh said to make lychee national product, the competent agencies need to further support farmers to apply advanced science and technology into production and area expansion; improve product quality to meet diverse export markets; enhance trade promotion activities and market expansion, especially accelerate to attract investor to intensive processing technology so as to create high added value for lychee.
According to PM’s Decision No.157/QD-TTg on February 1, 2021 about the programme to develop national product to 2030, if Bac Giang lychee becomes national product, it will be supported to expand the production scale, enhance quality and competitiveness, build trademark, promote the product and many other priorities.
The participating organizations and businesses will be offered advantages in term of credit, taxation, land using in line with legal regulation.
Thus, it is necessary to have joint collaboration from authority, competent agencies and lychee growers. The functional sectors should consult the PPC to propose and cooperate with the central ministries and departments to put Bac Giang lychee into the Programme to develop national product till 2030 so that local special fruit can obtain a chain to be national product.
