Bac Giang receives certificate ranking Doctor Dao Toan Ban’s cemetery and monument as national relic
History has it that Doctor Dao Toan Ban (1308-1386) or Dao Toan Man, Dao Toan Phu was born in Song Khe village, Song Khe commune, Yen Dung district, now Bac Giang city.

When he was young, he was famous for his intelligence. He topped the chart of the first-degree examination (an ancient examination at provincial level) when he was only 16 (in 1324) then he became the second-ranked Doctor at the age of 44. He was appointed as Quan Le Bo thuong thu (positions in Vietnam’s feudalism equivalent as a minister now) and tham tri tham hinh vien su (equivalent to assistant to the minister in charge of legal affairs).
Although he was high-ranking leader, Doctor Dao Toan Ban still spent time teaching. When he was living in Song Khe village, Doctor Dao Toan Ban was well-known as an excellent and dedicated teacher. He was also a good example in studying who inspired the studious tradition in the land of Song Khe.
After he passed away, he was buried in Bai Trang area, Lim Xuyen village, Song Khe commune. The people of Song khe village built a monument to worship him. In recent years, the local government and people have embellished this relic to become a center for religious cultural activities of Dao family line and locals.

The relic consists of Doctor Dao Toan Ban’s cemetery and monument and monument of his son Doctoral laureate Dao Su Tich. In 2001, this monument was ranked as historical relic by Chairman of the provincial people’s committee. The Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism decided to rank the historical relic of Doctor Dao Toan Ban’s cemetery and monument in Song Khe commune as the national relic.
The certificate recognizing the historical relic of Doctor Dao Toan Ban’s cemetery and monument the national relic was announced and given by representative of the municipal people’s committee and the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. At the receiving ceremony, the communal people’s committee and Dao family line organized a solemn certificate procession and incense offering ritual at the Doctor’s monument.
Speaking at the certificate receiving ceremony, representative of the people’s committee of Bac Giang city stressed, this ranking is to honour the famous person and affirmed the historical and cultural value of the relic while recognizing the great contributions of the party, government and people of Bac Giang city generally and Song Khe commune, Dao family line particularly.

In coming time, the city’s culture and information division needs to pay attention to communicating and promoting the relic value to enhance people’s awareness of protecting, preserving and boosting tourism promotion. Besides, it is necessary to organize site visits to educate people about the tradition, especially studious tradition of Doctor Dao Toan Ban and Doctoral laureate Dao Su Tich.
Song Khe commune was urged to foster management while collaborating with Dao family line to consolidate the relic management board, provide the relic regulation and create favourable conditions for people to visit this site.
