Xaysomboun province has advantages in agricultural development, thus agriculture is the top priority sector in Bac Giang’s support programme for its counterpart province. After the surveys to evaluate the climate, soil, farming conditions and cultivation practices, the Agriculture Encouragement Center of Bac Giang province organized the working delegations to support Xaysomboun to launch 4 models of rice, lychee and orange cultivation and fish culturing in last August and September.

Rice variety BC15 grows well in the fields of Xaysomboun.

Particularly, the rice growing model scaled at 11 hectares lured participation of 14 households including 6 production households in Tha Thom district with 5 hectares, 6 households in Long San district with 4 hectares and 2 households in Long Cheng district with 2 hectares.

To date, the rice variety BC15 has grown well with few pests and 127-day growth period yielding an average productivity of 5.26 tonnes per hectare, higher than the local rice variety in Xaysomboun (which yields only 3.8 tonnes per hectare).

“I was really touched to receive the video clips and photos of the golden rice fields full of grain sent by local people, which are ready to be harvested. This is the fruitful result after 6 months working hard with the model since the first kilos of rice seeds came to Xaysomboun. Besides, I am happy that the rice variety BC15 is very soft and fragrant, which is suitable to the taste of Lao people”, said engineer Ha Duc Thao, Deputy Head of the Agricultural Encouragement and Plantation Division under the provincial Agriculture Encouragement Center.

Apart from rice, the fish culturing model is also effective. The model was favorably launched in rainy season (August 2023) when the fish farming lakes and ponds were full of water. 18,000 fingerling fishes including tilapia, hybrid carp and grass carp shipped from Vietnam to Xaysomboun are ready for harvest now.

Lychee trees put out new leaves.

However, due to limitations in cultivation qualification and techniques, the average weight of tilapia reached only 0.7 kilo per each, carp reached 1.6 kilo and grass carp reached 1.5 kilo per each gaining total 2 tonnes of fish.

Although the model has not reached the expectations of Bac Giang province, it gained rather high results compared to the local cultivation practices, which was evaluated to suit the conditions and demand of the locality.

Besides, the 1-hectare V2 orange growing model with 625 seedlings and lychee cultivation model on 0.25 hectares with 100 main-crop lychee seedlings attracted participation of 4 households in Anouvong district.

The seedling quality was partly affected due to the far distance of transportation with the survival rate of 98 percent for orange and 74 percent for lychee. The trees have rooted, budded and well grown up.

According to Dao Xuan Vinh, Director of the provincial Agriculture Encouragement Center, which is in charge of the support farming models to Xaysomboun province, the center will implement 4 other support models by the end of 2024 including improving the herds of goats and cows, developing horse raising and simple net house vegetable cultivation.

Bac Giang province will support Xaysomboun with 20 Brahman oxen, 20 hybrid goats and 20 hybrid horses. The purpose of this model is to select male hybrid breeds suitable to the female breeds and farming conditions as well as their weather resistance to breed, hybridize and improve the livestock herds. The related units are selecting contractors to bring the breeds to Xaysomboun.

Besides, Bac Giang province will send 3 experts to Xaysomboun to instruct implementation of the models.
