Chinese grandmaster wins HDBank int’l chess tourney

Chinese grandmaster Wang Hao won the men’s group of the 2019 HDBank International Chess Tournament that wrapped up in Ho Chi Minh City on March 13.

With an Elo rating of 2,718, Wang – the champion in 2016 – drew with his fellow countryman Wen Yang, who has a Elo rating of 2,599, in the final game to gain a total of 7.5 points.

Chinese grandmaster Wang Hao (R) wins the men's group of the 2019 HDBank International Chess Tournament.

His final score was only 0.5 point higher than those of Wen Yang and Stanilav of Ukraine, but it was enough to earn him the trophy.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese players failed to obtain success at this year’s tournament.

Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son only finished at the 15th place with 6 points. Meanwhile, his wife Pham Le Thao Nguyen lost her advantages in the three last games although she had a chance to top the women’s group.

Nandhidhaa of India ranked first among female players.

Wang Hao was presented with a prize of 15,000 USD while Nandhidhaa received a prize of 6,000 USD.
