Conserving relics for tourism development

Updated: 18:01, 22/12/2022
(BGO)- Bac Giang province is home to a number of ethnic minority groups creating a colourful cultural panorama. The province has thousands of historical and cultural relics including many national and international intangible cultural heritages. Its heroic tradition, diversified culture and favourable traffic are great conditions for the province to boost tourism development.

Bac Giang is home to more than 2,000 historical and cultural relics including 746 ranked relics. The province has 4 artifacts recognized as national treasures. Quan ho folk songs, the Practices Related to the Vietnamese Beliefs in the Mother Goddesses of Three Realms, Practice of Then by the Tay, Nung and Thai ethnic minorities were recognized as the intangible heritages of human being by UNESCO while Ca tru (ceremonial singing) was listed as an intangible heritage in need of urgent protection.

Besides, the province has 11 national intangible heritages, 01 documentary heritage in Pacific Asia (the woodblocks of Vinh Nghiem pagoda).

1.35 million arrivals flocked to Bac Giang in 2022. The revenues from tourism is estimated at 650 billion VND (27.2 million USD).

Despite diversified and rich historical and cultural relic systems, the localities in Bac Giang province have not lured a large number of tourists to visit and enjoy intangible cultural “specialties”.

Talking about the reasons, Do Tuan Khoa, Vice Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said, the province has a large number of relics but they are scattered, which are lack of connection and outstanding relics. Infrastructure of the relic sites is not integrated without relic planning attached to tourism development. Promotion and communication on the heritage values is inadequate. The human resources for heritage -based tourism development are limited.

According to Associate professor PhD Bui Thanh Thuy, head of the Tourism Faculty, Hanoi University of Culture, the most important point is that Bac Giang has not created a tourism site which is powerful enough to activate and link other tourism destinations in the entire province including the relics.

In order to promote the cultural and historical values attached to tourism development, Bui Thanh Thuy said, the province needs to pay attention to re-building a professional and long-term tourism strategy with breakthrough and creative solutions towards both popular and luxury travel.

The leaders need to make dramatic changes in mindset to make focused investment to create a key tourism site with strong trademark to attract tourists. It is also necessary to build integrated tourism infrastructure ecosystem of resorts, hotels, entertainment areas, shopping and cuisine centers.

Besides, it is essential to support preservation and promotion of the cultural values, digitalize the database, apply science and technology and foster international cooperation and regional linkage in tourism development. The province also needs to set up valuable tourism programmes and events to locate the tourism products with trademark ensuring the distinct and uniqueness of Bac Giang.

Tourism is a combined economy, in which promoting cultural and historical values for development of this green economy is very significant because the profound cultural humanitarian values and heroic history of the nation are spread through tourism. On the other hand, revenues from tourism will contribute to preserving the everlasting cultural and historical values.
