Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam has asked enterprises to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology and tap into its applications as a way to bolster the country’s development.

The Deputy PM was speaking at the Vietnam AI Festival 2019 jointly held on August 16 by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI).

The Deputy PM added that Vietnam has no choice but promoting the development of AI due to the country’s low starting point and the significant opportunities that AI could bring about.

Speaking at the conference, MOST Minister Chu Ngoc Anh said that the ministry will support AI research, connect researchers, investors and enterprises to further AI research and application.

He expected that through the festival, experts would engage in discussions to promote the strong development of AI in Vietnam.

For his part, MPI Minister Nguyen Chi Dung said that the two ministries are working together to address the challenges facing the AI community in Vietnam.

He noted that Vietnam has determined AI as one of the breakthrough technologies and the MPI is formulating a national strategy on the fourth industrial revolution, of which AI is a key part.

According to Minister Dung, the MPI is working to support innovations and AI development such as providing capital for AI start-ups through investment funds and boosting the training of high-quality human resources for AI.

Last year the MPI and the MOST established the Vietnam Innovation Network to call on Vietnamese experts from around the world to come home and help increase the country’s technological level and innovation capacity.'

In the future, the MPI plans to expand the network and create a new fund to train high-quality human resources, including AI experts.
