Digitalization of fruit growing areas facilitates product management and traceability

Updated: 16:05, 01/03/2023
(BGO)- After more than 1 year implementing the project to support sustainable development of fruit trees, the competent agencies in northern province of Bac Giang have digitalized 129 concentrated production areas. This year, the sub-department of Plant Protection (under the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) has digitalized 80 more planting areas, which is defined its key task.

In 2022, Thanh Hai Agricultural Cooperative in Cau Den village, Thanh Hai commune, Luc Ngan district was funded 50 million VND (2,100 USD) by the district people’s committee to digitalize the lychee growing area via setting up crop codes and traceability codes.

Customers scan the traceability code of lychee product at Ngo Van Hung’s family in Cau Den village, Thanh Hai commune, Luc Ngan district.

According to Ngo Van Lien, Chairman and Director of the Cooperative, 16 members of the Cooperative were supported with traceability stamps and crop codes from this fund. Each member has an account on app Smartnote to update caring diary as well as information of their family’s lychee gardens such as land area, number of trees, expected output and harvest time.

“Previously, members of the Cooperative had to write caring dairy in a notebook but now they can update information on their smart phones. Domestic and foreign customers can search how the lychee is cared by scanning the QR codes. Specially, thanks to this app, code leader can know whether the members have updated diary or not when he does not have to go to the gardens”, said Ngo Van Lien.

Thanks to traceability stamp, the product of Nghia Phuong custard apple Cooperative is sold in some modern retail stores at higher prices than traditional markets while the product star apple of Hop Duc star apple production and consumption Cooperative in Cua Song village, Hop Duc commune, Tan Yen district has become more popular.

This time, the sub-department of Plant Protection is reviewing to select 80 growing areas for digitalization mainly the concentrated production areas following VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards.

The province currently has more than 51,000 hectares of fruit growing area including about 28,300 hectares of lychee and the remaining area for other fruits like orange, pomelo, longan, custard apple, jujube and guava.

Implementing the project to support sustainable development of fruit trees, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development digitalized 129 growing areas in 2022 including 103 lychee growing areas, 20 pomelo areas, 5 longan areas and 1 custard apple area.

In the digitalized areas, the information about location, area and caring procedures is regularly updated on the website of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Thus, consumers and enterprises can easily access to information of the products while opening more opportunities for the products to get into foreign markets and present on e-commerce platforms.

Thanks to traceability codes, the custard apple product of Nghia Phuong custard apple Cooperative in Luc Nam has been on the shelves of Coop mart.

As digitalization of growing areas is defined not only to facilitate management of the competent agencies but it also helps the province’s farm products to approach e-commerce platforms to improve the product values, the Agricultural sector will pay special attention to issuing planting area codes attached to digitalization. Firstly, the sector will complete issuing planting area codes for the total fruit growing area at the scale of 10 hectares or more while supporting and guiding the households to update information on electronic diary.

According to the project to support sustainable development of fruit trees of the province in the period from 2021 to 2025, it is targeted to grant 187 new fruit planting area codes. Besides, 549 concentrated fruit growing areas will be digitalized including 262 lychee growing areas, 68 longan growing areas, 189 citrus tree growing areas (orange and pomelo) and the remaining for custard apple, jujube, guava and star apple.

According to Dang Van Tang, Director of the sub-department of Plant Protection, digitalization of planting areas not only helps farmers to manage production in modern manner but it is also an important channel for advertising the local products. With digitalized maps, customers can get information on productivity of each planting area to ensure transparency about planting area and packaging facility codes.
