5S is a methodology to improve the working environment and technical management which was applied in Japan in 1980s. 5S is 5S stands for 5 Japanese words: "SEIRI", "SEITON", "SEISO", SEIKETSU" và "SHITSUKE", which means “Sort”, “Set in order”; “Sweep”; “Standardize” and “Sustain” respectively.

5S methodology was firstly applied in Vietnam in 1993 to effectively sustain the quality management, increase the profit, improve labour hygiene and safety. After acknowledging its clear effectiveness, many local businesses have applied the methodology.

Since GU Vina Company Limited in Dinh Tram industrial park was established in 2014 with modern production line to produce martphone components, the company has paid due attention to improving the working environment. The company Vice Director Nguyen Thi Thuy said the business started applying the methodology in 2016 with practical efficiency. Good observance of working principles, order arrangement helped labour operate more quickly with higher productivity.

Similarly, Quang Dong Vu Hao Electronic Company Limited in Lang Giang district applies this methodology to create safe and order working environment as well as good habits for labours. A supervision team takes weekly inspection around the company. Since the operation in 2018, the business has reported no incident relating to labour unsafety.

A shared image at enterprises with 5S application is clean thing in order right from the company gate to the working areas. In many businesses, the trade union consulted the leader to integrate 5S with various activities to raise the awareness and working manner among workers.

Nichirin Vietnam Company Limited in Quang Chau industrial park arranges meeting in early working shifts at the factory to announce the execution of 5S.

Meanwhile, Viet Pan Pacific Company Limited in Bac Giang city allows workers to take 5 minute break between working shifts for doing exercie and local cleaning to improve physical condition, create neaty habbit and insprie next working time.

Vice Director of the Department of Science and Technology Trieu Ngoc Trung said the company leader plays the key role to sustain 5S methodology in long period.

The company should persit in creating 5S culture so as to gradually change the awareness and action, improve the safe working environment, save the cost and promote maximum productivity.

Apart from accelerating the communication about the purpose and meaning of 5S and support policies, the Department will launch training course about advanced quality managmenet system for business and cooperative, especially building programme to implement some pilot models at company by evaluating the practical result in applied units.
