Extraordinary energy of wounded teacher

(BGO) –  Though wounded solder Nguyen Manh Hien (born in 1952) in Num village, Dinh Tri commune (Bac Giang city) has lot of shrapnel lodged in the right half of his head and left hand, he overcomes the sickness to absorbedly inspire many generations of students.

Unforgettable memories

The house with three generation following teaching career of the war invalid is located near national road No.31. The battlefield and war stories in the steel land of Quang Tri in 1971- 1972 made him quiet in deep emotion. The memories of comrades, historical moments he witnessed were told to the youngsters to help them understand more about the sacrifice of the elders in the struggle for national defense.

Wishing to follow the teaching career of his father, the excellent student Nguyen Manh Hien passed the entrance exam to English Faculty of Hanoi University of Foreign Language in 1970 when the resistant war against America was fierce.

Hien and two friends at the same faculty voluntarily joined the army to be artillery soldier at Quang Tri battlefield. Each hard and intense combat toughened the steel spirit for the soldier. In a fierce struggle on May 1971, a lot of shrapnel lodged in the right half of his head and left hand making him unconscious with distorted face.

In spite of severe pain, he was so lucky to stay alive because many soldiers sacrificed in this battle including two of his friends.

Becoming wounded soldier at the most beautiful age of life, Hien was keen on teaching dream. Later he was allowed to return to university. Though he must suffer from intense pain, the young war invalid exerted every effort to train physically and complete the course.

The most happiness came to the 41 percent wounded soldier when his girl friend in hometown always loved him no matter what happened to his body. Then they got married in 1974.

When Hien nearly completed the fourth years, once more time he was assigned the task to be interpreter for our army in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh city nowadays). It was close to Independence Day of the South (April 1975).

Wholeheartedly devoting to teaching career

When the country was reunited, Hien returned to teach at Que Vo High School (in former Ha Bac province). Living amid several difficulties and lack of foreign books, teacher Hien usually spent a part of his salary to buy books, notebooks and studying tools to present to impoverished students and children of martyrs and sick soldiers ‘families.

Amid many difficulties and challenges in life and old pain, teacher Hien selects a positive lifestyle and journey. The extraordinary energy helps widespread fine image of a soldier in normal life.

After four years, he was appointed to teach at Ngo Gia Tu College in Bac Giang province. Many generations of students here were happy to present at his lesson not only for language studying but expanded knowledge about culture, history and the way to become good citizen.

Teacher Hien also Vice Head of English Faculty is a bright model in teaching career, sacrifice, simplicity and high spirit of overcoming any difficulties.

In 2007, he was unconscious when preparing the lesion. Though Hien was hospitalized in time, the old wound made him hemiplegic then say goodbye to the lecture hall.

Thanks to industrious practice, teacher Hien must rely on the crutches and wheelchair to move. He still reads books in foreign language then sums up the contents and notes down as if he is preparing for upcoming lessons.

During 15 years on the wheelchair, the former teacher keeps planning lessons on foreign language. Though Hien is now 70 years old, he still discusses and communicated in English with youngest son Nguyen Manh Dung who is also an English teacher at Thai Dao Secondary School (Lang Giang district).

In free time, he composes poem to diversify his soul. He got married with three children, two of whom follow grandfather and father to be teacher and silently devote to local educational sector.

Amid many difficulties and challenges in life and old pain, teacher Hien selects a positive lifestyle and journey. The extraordinary energy helps widespread fine image of a soldier in normal life.

Bac Giang’s delegates offer incense to pay tribute to martyrs in Quang Tri province
(BGO)- On the occasion of 75th anniversary of War Invalid and Martyrs’ Day of Vietnam (July 27, 1947-2022), the delegates of Bac Giang province on July 15 visited to pay tribute to heroic martyrs in Quang Tri province.

(BGO) – On the occasion of 75th anniversary of War Invalid and Martyrs’ Day of Vietnam (July 27), the Women’s Union cooperated with the Military Command in Bac Giang province to visit and present gifts to 21 Vietnamese Heroic Mother in the province from July 8 – 13, each consisting of one million VND, confectionary and a set of silk clothes.
Cemetery caretaker pays tribute to his comrades
(BGO)- Going through the wars with tens of wounds on his body, veteran Duong Nguyen Thong (born in 1943) in Thanh Mai residential group, Da Mai ward, Bac Giang city, Bac Giang province thought he was so lucky to return his homeland. 20 years caring the martyrs cemetery voluntarily is a way to show his gratitude to his comrades who sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the nation.
Exhibition honours revolutionary contributors
An exhibition will be held at the Vietnam Exhibition Centre for Culture and Arts in Hanoi, from July 24-27, to honour and pay respect to fallen and wounded soldiers and revolutionary contributors.
Some 1.2 million USD to be given to national contributors
(BGO)- On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day July 27 (1949-2022), the provincial People’s Committee of Bac Giang province spent the budget to present gifts to more than 34,800 national contributors.
