High-tech agriculture focuses on large specialized cultivation areas
BAC GIANG - In addition to industrial development, Viet Yen township also prioritizes agricultural production, especially high-tech agriculture. It is developing large, concentrated specialized cultivation areas to gradually increase income value per unit of agricultural land area as well as farmers' incomes.
According to the township’s Economic Department, there are currently over 40 hi-tech agricultural production models in membrane and net houses, covering a total area of about 10.2 hectares.

In general, the owners of membrane and net houses choose intensive farming of high-value crops such as melons, lilies, and black grapes. After deducting costs, they earn an average profit of 600 million VND to over 1 billion VND (39,347 USD) per hectare per year.
As a key locality for industrial, urban, and service development in the province, Viet Yen attracts thousands of workers each year, leading to an increasing demand for safe agricultural products.
In light of this reality, the township consistently identifies agricultural production as an important economic sector that not only provides food and foodstuffs but also supports the development of industry, urban areas, and services.
Therefore, it has directed localities to focus on developing agriculture towards commodity production, applying high technology to production, processing, and preservation; and encouraging investment in agriculture to increase value per unit of area.
The resolution of the district’s 23rd Party Congress for the 2020-2025 term set a goal of raising the production value per hectare of agricultural land to 138 million VND (5,430 USD) by 2025, up 16 million VND from 2020.
To achieve this goal, the township has issued and implemented the project “Supporting infrastructure investment for specialized farming areas associated with sustainable agricultural development, enhancing efficiency and value of agricultural products for 2022-2025”.
Under the project, the township has supported the construction of infrastructure for three concentrated vegetable growing areas and one flower growing area, covering a total of 202 hectares.
It has also focused on introducing high-yield, high-value crop varieties into production and upgrading the irrigation system for cultivation. The total funding for implementing the project components is over 46.3 billion VND, coming from the local budget.
Than Van Thuan, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Viet Yen People's Committee, stated that along with financial support, the township has actively collaborated with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to apply scientific and technical advances into production.
It has gradually innovated and improved forms of organizing production; built and replicated the “state-business-farmer-scientist” linkage model, and formed a chain of producing, processing, and selling agricultural products through contracts.

The township has created conditions for businesses to invest in and apply high technology to concentrated clean agricultural production while enhancing vocational training and transferring new production methods to rural laborers.
Thanks to proactive direction and implementation, Viet Yen has basically fulfilled the objectives of the project. The township has established and maintained 13 cultivation areas across 13 communes and wards, which have been granted domestic cultivation codes for crops such as vegetables, tubers, sticky rice, and gladiolus.
The crops grown in membrane and net houses have also been given codes, yielding higher economic value compared to traditional crops. In the first nine months of this year, the estimated agricultural production value per hectare of land in the township reached 122 million VND.
It is forecast to reach 138 million VND by the end of this year, fulfilling the target set by the district Party Congress for the 2020-2025 term one year ahead of schedule.
