With a wish to prolong preservation time for lychee, a kind of fruit with the largest output in Bac Giang province, four students of the Ngo Si Lien High School (Bac Giang city) namely Duong Hai Van and Tran Viet Hoang from Class 11A3, Luu Toan Thang, from Class 12A2, and Nguyen Thi Thu Trang from Class 12A6, pursued a project of "Producing lychee preservation membranes with recycled silk and silver nanoparticles".

They used silkworm cocoons and some by-products to make a solution. Through the experiment, when using the preservation solution, the lychees can be kept fresh for 12-14 days, even preservation can be conducted from the time when lychees are not harvested, ensuring food safety, low cost and environmental friendliness. This project won the second prize at the 2018 provincial Junior Creativity Competition.
The products are being stored and preserved at the provincial Center for Disease Control so that relevant agencies continue studies and tests. Nguyen Thi Thu Trang, a representative of the group, said: "To successfully produce this solution, I and my friends spent a lot of time and effort researching scientific materials and took advantage of the support and advice of teachers and prestigious experts”.
The above-mentioned is just one of the many scientific-technological initiatives being studied by students in the province through the provincial Junior Creativity Competition and the Science and Technology Innovation Contest held by the provincial Department of Education and Training. In the past three years, hundreds of models and products by students have been awarded at the provincial and national levels.
Among them are the set of color indicators made from fruits and vegetables used to distinguish acid and base and identify borax in food by students of the Ngo Si Lien High School in Bac Giang city. Through the use of the set, consumers have the opportunity to test the quality of food to see whether it contains more or less borax, thereby protecting their health.
The ball-shooting machine supporting the practice of table tennis by students of the Nguyen Hong Secondary School (Tan Yen district) helps players in self-training, without other support. Or the smart garden-pond-cage model of pupils in the Xuong Lam Secondary School (Lang Giang district) can deliver remote control to take care of vegetable gardens and pump water into fish ponds, helping increase productivity and product value, and reduce farmers’ working efforts.

Dao Thi Minh Hai, deputy head of the Division of Secondary-Ethnic Education under the provincial Department of Education and Training, said since 2016, 14 projects have won national prizes at the Science and Technology Innovation Contest. The number of projects registering for the provincial-level contest increased year after year.
In order to spread outstanding projects and promote scientific research among students, the Department of Education and Training has regularly instructed units to organize workshops and training courses through the school website on the contest; and seek methods and ideas for scientific research.
At the same time, they are urged to include the guiding of students to do scientific research into the activities of professional groups as well as assign tasks to teachers and students to together discuss and form ideas for research projects.
In 2017 alone, the provincial Junior Creativity Competition saw 400 entries, up 70 percent compared to 2016. This year’s figure increased nearly 10 percent against last year. All 10 districts and city have set up organizing boards for district-level competitions.
Notably, the fields of research were quite diverse, with many new, highly-applicable models and products, showing students’ creativity to master science and technology. The competition organizers introduced some products and models that can be applied in reality at the "2018 Startup Innovation Competition", and five models and products to the provincial Department of Science and Technology to access funding for continued research.
