Lao patient receives liver, kidneys from traffic accident victim in Bac Giang
On December 25, the Vietnam-Germany Hospital announced that for the first time Vietnam has recorded a transplant of two organs at the same time.
Accordingly, doctors of the hospital conducted combined liver-kidney transplantation on a Lao man who suffered from liver and kidney failure. The organs were taken from a brain-dead person who was a 19-year-old man losing his life in an accident in Bac Giang.
For the first time, doctors at the Vietnam-Germany Hospital have conducted a transplant of two organs on a patient. |
Dr. Nguyen Quang Nghia, Director of the hospital’s Organ Transplantation Center, said this was a very special transplant. The patient was a foreigner, with chronic kidney failure accompanied by cirrhosis (due to alcohol). He also had a history of diabetes and high blood pressure.
When being transferred to the Vietnam-Germany Hospital, this patient was in the end-stage liver and kidney failure with an organ transplant order. In addition to dialysis, he also received medical treatment for gastrointestinal bleeding.
After assessment, the experts of the hospital decided to conduct combined liver- kidney transplantation to replace the patient’s two failed organs in order to avoid risks from two consecutive surgeries.
The transplant took place on December 17, lasting 12 hours, with the participation of nearly 100 professionals in the field of organ transplant. During the operation, doctors conducted both liver transplantation and continuous dialysis to support the patient's impaired kidneys. Currently, the patient can self-breath and his liver and kidney functions have gradually recovered.
According to Prof. Dr. Tran Binh Giang, Director of the Vietnam-Germany Hospital, combined liver-kidney transplantation is a difficult technique in the field of organ transplantation, requiring sufficient experience. The replacement of two organs at the same time will prolong the surgery time, use more complex techniques and require coordination between surgeon groups.
From the organs donated by the above mentioned 19-year-old male in Bac Giang, in addition to the Lao patient, who received combined liver-kidney transplantation, doctors at the Vietnam-Germany Hospital will also conduct lung and heart transplants for other patients.
