Nearly 23 million students nationwide enter 2020-2021 academic year

Updated: 20:10, 05/09/2020
The 2020-2021 academic year officially began for nearly 23 million students across the country following opening ceremonies on the morning of September 5.

Most schools only organised the ceremonial part and eliminated the festive part to avoid gathering too many students in schoolyards in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

For localities applying social distancing rules, educational institutions held their opening ceremonies online to ensure the safety of students.

As projected by the MOET, the 2020-2021 academic year will feature more than 5.38 million preschool students and over 17.5 million students at the general education level – over 8.7 million at primary schools, more than six million at secondary schools and over 2.8 million at high schools.

In the new school year, the entire educational sector continues to focus on implementing nine major groups of tasks, including reviewing, planning and developing the network of education and training institutions throughout the country; improving the quality and standardising teachers and educational administrators at all levels; enhancing the quality of preschool and general education; renovating management and improving the efficiency of continuing education; strengthening the education of ethics, lifestyle and life skills as well as ensuring school safety.

Next, the sector will work to improve the quality of foreign language teaching, especially English, at all grades and training levels; accelerate the application of information technology in teaching, learning and education management; implement digital transformation in education and training; and promote decentralisation and autonomy for educational institutions.

The five basic groups of solutions to be implemented in the 2020-2021 academic year include continuing to improve institutions and enhance administrative reform concerning education and training; improving the leadership and management capacity of educational administrators; accelerating inspection, supervision, prevention and handling of negative manifestations in education-training activities; strengthening investment resources in education-training; enhancing the testing, evaluation, accreditation of education and boosting communication.
