Am Vai pagoda.

Am Vai pagoda was told to be built in Ly dynasty. As it is located in high mountain, tourists can find inner peace here while listening to bell ringing with the wind, insects and birds singing.

Coming to this pagoda, tourist can discover the fairy tales imprinted in the mind of the generations of local people. Those are the legend of Tien and Gao caves, footprints of the Buddhist on the stones, fairy’s chessboard and emotional stories of Vung Chi, Vung Em (pools of sisterhood) and Ham Rong mountain.

Legend has it, there was a female monk practising Buddhism here in Tran dynasty (the 18th to 19th centuries); hence the pagoda was named Am Vai (vai means female monk). There was one cave of cash and one cave of rice in the pagoda, which was told to bear an exact amount of money and rice enough for this monk’s daily needs.

One day when some guests visited the monk, she tried to enlarge to get more money and rice from the cave. From then on, no more money and rice ran out from the cave. This tale maintains the profound Buddhism’s philosophy that human beings must know what is “enough” and avoid three poisons of “greed, hatred, and ignorance”.

Currently, thanks to due attention and donation of the people, Am Vai relic has been well-constructed with more convenient traffic roads. This becomes one of the attractive spiritual tourism sites in the province.

The trace of Am Vai ancient pagoda is the inside tower with old tablet of a monk in Truc Lam Zen Sect who was crown Ty Kheo Nhu Lien, became a bodhisattva and entered nirvana. This stone tower was made with brownstones. The tower’s roof edge was inscribed with the characters “Lien hoa bao thap” (Lotus tower).

With its outstanding values, the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism decided to rank Am Vai pagoda as a national relic site. Am Vai pagoda festival is organized on the 2nd and 3rd of March in Lunar Calendar attracting many tourists, monks and Buddhism followers.
