Opportunities for early ripening lychee to enter European market
BAC GIANG- Previously, early ripening lychee was mainly sold in domestic market and a small volume was exported to some neighbouring countries. Recently, a number of businesses have promoted its unique taste to gradually bring this product into European market, opening more doors for and enhancing value of early ripening lychee.
Vietnamese lychee has become well-known for European people for a long time, according to Tran Trong Nguyen, CEO of Mova Plus Joint Stock Company (Mova Plus), operating in export of agricultural products.

Based on his research for over 20 years, lychee from the Caribbean or Israel penetrated European market but Vietnamese lychee has affirmed its quality and made good impression on native consumers.
Currently, European people are more interested in lower-sugar products with natural flavor. Thus, the Company pays attention to lychee ripening lychee including U Hong lychee variety.
This variety of lychee has light sweet taste, which is ripen earlier than lychee in Thailand and China; thus, there will be more possibilities to distribute early ripening lychee to remote areas in Europe.
Mova Plus planned to export about 500 tonnes of U Hong lychee to Europe this lychee crop and the volume is expected to increase in coming years and reach more than 2,000 tonnes in 2030.
In order to prepare for this lychee season, the Company has cooperated with lychee growers in the communes of Phuc Hoa (Tan Yen district) and Tan Moc (Luc Ngan district) in 5 years at stable price and send experts to collaborate with the growers to care for lychee following GlobalGAP procedures.
According to the competent agency, the province currently has over 8,000 hectares of early ripening lychee. The approach of Mova Plus opens up prospects and potentials for expanding export of lychee to the world.
In order to continue to enhance the value and take advantage of early ripening lychee, which faces low risk, it is necessary to take account of the structure and increasing growing area of early ripening lychee while providing mechanism to attract businesses to link with growers to have qualified product and “popularize” the lychee in Europe, a demanding and difficult market.
