Vietnam becomes largest supplier of black tea to Taiwan (China)

Updated: 10:48, 04/03/2025

According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, data from Taiwan's (China) Customs shows that Vietnam is now the largest supplier of black tea to Taiwan by volume.

While Taiwan's black tea imports from major suppliers like Sri Lanka, India, and Indonesia have declined for several years, imports from Vietnam rebounded in 2024, reaching 7,970 tonnes, valued at 12.47 million USD—an increase of 0.9% in both volume and value compared to 2023.

Vietnam is focusing on developing safe tea growing areas to boost exports.

However, in terms of value, Sri Lanka remains the top supplier, exporting 4,180 tonnes worth 18.99 million USD in 2024, despite a 4.5% drop in volume and a 0.6% decline in value.

For green tea, Vietnam and Japan account for about 95% of Taiwan’s total imports. Vietnam leads in volume, though its market share has declined from 89.3% in 2015 to 75.0% in 2023, while Japan’s share has risen from 7.2% to 19.5%.

In 2024, Vietnam’s green tea exports to Taiwan rebounded, increasing its market share to 76.5%, while Japan’s share dropped to 18.7% after eight years of growth.

Taiwan’s imports of tea extracts and related products surged in 2024, reaching 1,840 tonnes, valued at 15.47 million USD—up 16.3% in volume and 0.2% in value.

Imports from key suppliers such as Thailand, Indonesia, China, Japan, and India grew significantly. Vietnam's exports in this category remain modest at 12 tonnes, worth 142,000 USD, but saw a notable increase of 39.9% in volume and 21.4% in value from 2023.
