Nearly 600 performers join Quan Ho folk singing contest in Bac Ninh

Updated: 16:09, 04/03/2025

A Quan Ho Folk Singing Competition took place in the northern province of Bac Ninh from March 2 to 4, gathering around 580 instrumentalists, performers and vocalists from eight community art troupes and 58 Quan Ho villages from both inside and outside the province.

Hosted by the Bac Ninh Provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, the competition featured two categories of stage performance and duet singing.

In the stage performance category, each community art troupe delivered a performance in the form of solo, duet, or trio singing, which highlighted traditional Quan Ho melodies.

The lyrics could either be completely original, or rewritten to praise the glorious Party, great Uncle Ho, and the country’s historical and cultural traditions, as well as the national renewal process.

The duet category witnessed the competition of 100 pairs of singers from the Quan Ho villages, who were requested to vocalise 50 traditional verses and 150 ancient verses of Quan Ho lyrics in line with traditional styles and techniques.

The participating pairs were selected through two preliminary rounds which were held previously at the district and provincial levels.

Quan Ho Bac Ninh Folk Songs were inscribed on the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009

The contest provided an opportunity for participants to exchange experience from each other while encouraging efforts to preserve and promote the value of Quan Ho folk singing.

It also helps assess the quality of the practice of Quan Ho folk singing as well as the short-term and long-term plans on fulfilling commitments to UNESCO regarding the heritage.
