Bac Giang works hard for bountiful lychee harvest

Updated: 18:44, 10/02/2025

BAC GIANG – Lychee orchards in Bac Giang province are entering the flowering stage, with a high predicted flowering rate, signaling a promising harvest. The agricultural sector and local authorities are working hard to guide farmers in caring for their orchards to ensure high yields and meet market demands.

While last year’s unfavorable weather led to poor harvests in many lychee-growing areas, local farmers are optimistic this year as lychee trees across the province are blooming simultaneously.

An official in Phuc Hoa (Tan Yen) guides local farmers on how to care for lychees during the flowering period.

The orchard of Vi Van Bao in Phuc Le village, Phuc Hoa commune, Tan Yen district, is expected to begin flowering in about ten days. With nearly 30 years of experience in lychee farming, Bao shared that the cold, dry weather before this spring season was ideal for flower bud differentiation. Over 98% of his nearly 500 lychee trees have flower buds.

These days, Bao visits the orchard regularly, ensuring the trees are properly watered, applying fertilizers, and spraying micro-nutrients to help the flowers develop well and increase fruit setting.

"Last year, this orchard produced 10 tonnes of lychees, with a net profit of nearly VND300 million (about USD 11,820) after expenses. With favourable weather this year, I expect the yield to reach 12-13 tonnes. I also hope our lychees will be exported, bringing in higher profits," Bao said.

Phuc Hoa commune has 725 hectares of lychees, with 700 hectares under harvest. The trees are beginning to bloom, and the predicted flowering rate exceeds 95%, higher than last year.

Thanks to successful branding and effective promotional efforts, many companies have already signed contracts to purchase Phuc Hoa lychees after last season’s harvest.

This year, the total lychee area in Bac Giang province is 29,700 hectares, with 21,700 hectares dedicated to the main crop, and the rest for early harvest. If the weather continues to be favorable, with high flowering and fruit-setting rates, this year’s harvest is expected to be plentiful.

The period when the trees are preparing to bloom is the critical "golden" phase that determines both the yield and quality of the lychees. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has advised local agricultural divisions to enhance monitoring and provide guidance on pest control and the application of advanced farming techniques.

Additionally, local authorities are continuously reviewing and expanding lychee-growing areas that meet VietGAP, GlobalGAP, and organic standards, focusing on supporting the production of safe, high-quality products for both domestic consumption and export.

Bac Giang is known nationwide as the lychee capital. Revenue from lychees significantly contributes to the local agricultural production value and economic growth, making it a top priority for both local authorities and farmers.
