Project “self -operating emergency elevator without using electricity”

Updated: 21:31, 17/12/2020
(BGO)- With many outstanding advantages, the project “self -operating emergency elevator without using electricity” of Hoang Quoc Khanh, the student of class 9A1, Le Quy Don junior high school in Bac Giang city was awarded first prize at the Technical Science Contest in the academic year 2020 – 2021 by the provincial Department of Education and Training.

Based on the fact that many apartments and high buildings in Bac Giang lack of effective solutions for emergency escape while a number of fires has occurred in some localities causing big damage of human and assets, Hoang Quoc Khanh came up with an idea of finding emergency escape solutions for high buildings.

Hoang Quoc Khanh presents his project.

In early 2020, Khanh started studying and seeking answers for the questions: how to make steady speed of an elevator with different loads? Is it possible to stop at each floor to pick up passengers and reduce vibration when landing?

On implementing his idea, in line with the knowledge of physics he has learned at junior high school about pulley, leverage, elasticity and friction, Quoc Khanh was early taught the grade10- physic knowledge in motion with constant acceleration.

Quoc Khanh often takes time to study the project in the afternoons or weekends in order not to affect the main curriculum at school.

As presenting his idea, Quoc Khanh shared the prominent feature is the fixed and balance-weight pulley design so that the elevator can run without electricity. Besides, the brake system combined with leverage is made to accelerate frictional force when the number of persons in the elevator increases to gain steady speed with different loads. In addition, the latches help the elevator to stop at every floor to pick up passengers while the cable ends with springs help to reduce vibration of cabin when the elevator is landing.

Le Quy Don junior high school has sent students to take part in the provincial Technical Science Contest in recent 3 years, particularly this year they gained the highest result with both projects winning prizes. Apart from Hoang Quoc Khanh’s first prize, another project won second prize.

“Khanh’s achievement motivates other students to raise initiative. For the school, we will pay attention and create conditions of time and facilities as well as providing suitable rewards and fund for teachers and students conducting scientific researches”, said teacher Hoang Trong Thuy, head of the school.
