Red Spring Festival in Bac Giang: Guaranteeing blood reserve to save people

(BGO)- In order to spread the meaning of Red Spring Festival and attract involvement of people at all strata, the provincial Steering Board for voluntary blood donation (VBD), Tan Yen district, the provincial Youth Union and Tien Phong (Vanguard) Newspaper in Bac Giang jointly held an event on 24 January to launch the festival and “Red Sunday” 2021 in Tan Yen district. 

The event was attended by Permanent Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Mai Son, Head of the provincial VBD Steering Board, masses of public officials and people in the district.

This is the 6th consecutive year the provincial VBD Steering Board chose Red Sunday to kick off the Red Spring Festival. With the message “Donating blood to save people – your life and my life”, “Red Sunday” campaign lasts from November 2020 until March 2021 in 43 provinces and cities with about 80 blood- donation spots that is expected to receive more than 50,000 blood units.

Speaking at the event, Mai Son stressed the importance of voluntary blood donation campaign to continue and preserve the national tradition of solidarity “The good leaves protect tattered ones”. Thanks to involvement of people of all strata across the province, the province has received more than 100,000 blood units since 2006 with year-over-year increases. Particularly, the province still received nearly 22,400 blood units in 2020 despite impact of Covid-19 pandemic, exceeding 123 percent of the set target assigned by the National Steering Board with participation of 1.15 percent of the province’s population.

He called for all officials, party members, youth unionists, labourers and people in the province to actively participate in volunteer blood donation and mobilize others to join contributing to handle blood shortages before, during and after Tet. Besides, he directed the Red Cross Society at all levels – the standing agency of the VBD Steering Board to improve propaganda to raise people’s awareness of the importance of blood donation to save lives, collaborate with health sector to define the demand for blood transfusion to have effective and safe blood receiving plans and mobilize sponsors for blood donation activities.

According to a report by the Organizing Board, 764 safe blood units have been received at the end of the Red Sunday campaign and sent to the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion to supplement the blood reserve to save patients.

On surveying some provincial and district-level hospitals in Bac Giang, the blood resources for emergency and treatment have been ensured. Some cases in need of urgent blood transfusion were satisfied by their relatives and volunteers of the blood donation clubs.

According to Le Thi Duyen, Chairwoman of the provincial Red Cross Society, Deputy Head of the provincial VBD Steering Board, in line with proper schedules for blood donation and mobilizing people to take part in blood donation campaigns, 10 districts and city established reserve teams to readily donate blood in emergency during Tet festival. Particularly, a reserve team including 80 volunteers will be arranged at provincial level to donate blood 24 hours a day during Tet holiday.

“We call for all people and all families to actively response to and participate in periodical blood donation when you are in good health condition to share difficulties with patients. Each of your blood drop donated will help to save one life and spread good human values in the community”, said Duyen.
