Safe agricultural products made by women

Updated: 08:57, 25/02/2020
(BGO) - Implementing the project "Supporting women in starting a business in the 2017 – 2025 period" in association with encouraging women to engage in clean production, clean consumption and food hygiene and safety, women’s unions at all levels in Bac Giang province have actively supported its members in developing many models of safe agricultural production and trading to serve daily consumption and supply to the market.

Promoting the strengths of each region

The Tri Yen women’s soy sauce production group in Long Khanh village, Tri Yen commune (Yen Dung district) was established in 2015, including six members.

To make a good batch of soy sauce, the women must prepare fragrant glutinous sticky rice (yellow flower sticky rice), green beans, white salt and clean water. Most of the ingredients for making soy sauce are carefully selected. Thanks to compliance with that production process, each year the group provides the market with about 6,000 liters of soy sauce, at a price of 40,000 VND (1.72 USD) per liter.

In 2018, the Yen Dung district Women's Union and the communal Women's Union supported 10 million VND (430 USD) to help the group register a label for their product. Thereby, the product labeled ‘Tri Yen soy sauce’ made by women has been known by many people, becoming a local specialty with consumption doubling and tripling compared to the past.

In addition to instructing each other on production techniques, members of the communal Women’s Union have been sent to attend many training programmes on safe agricultural production and consumption. The Tri Yen women’s soy sauce production group displayed and introduced products at the Vinh Nghiem Pagoda Festival, the women's creative start-up festival, and trade promotion seminars in 2019.

In order to support women union’s members in a timely manner, since the project "Supporting women in starting a business in the 2017-2025 period" was launched in 2017, the provincial Women's Union has appraised and provided 43 women’s projects and cooperative groups with total loans worth over 3.8 billion VND (163,500 USD).

In the coming time, the group will continue to invest more in machines, contributing to modernizing the production process and increasing production.

The women’s union members in Que Nham commune (Tan Yen district) have learned and joined the group of producing commodity crops up to VietGAP standards for more than 2 years. The commodity crop production area reaches about 17ha in different villages. Most crops are selected according to the seasons such as onion, garlic, vegetables and sweet corn. In addition, some members have also planted and expanded the area of medicinal plants such as ginseng.

Supporting members to maintain sustainable production

Higher consumer awareness of safe agricultural products results in increasing difficulties that members of safe agricultural production groups are facing. At present, the models of cooperative groups membered by women or established with support from the women’s unions at different levels are mostly small-scale, with scattered production areas. Capital difficulties hinder their investment in technical application.

According to Pham Thi Hang, Vice Chairwoman of the provincial Women's Union, her union has directed its chapters to strengthen links to expand production scale to increase product quality and value, and create products with registered labels and origin certification to meet consumer needs, toward safety. It has also launched communication campaigns to encourage its members to participate in training courses on safe agricultural production, ensuring compliance with regulations.

The women’s unions at all levels have persuaded their members to sign commitments to producing, processing and trading safe agricultural products.

Based on the characteristics and strengths of the locality, each unit has its own way to support women to develop and expand production and trading of safe farm produce.
