Updated: 16:44, 20/09/2019
The 2019 National Track and Field Championships officially concluded in Ho Chi Minh City on September 19, with the Army team coming out on top overall and seven new national records being set throughout four days of competition.

The last day of the tournament saw the Army team grab four consecutive gold medals in the men’s 10,000m, high jump, 4x200m events and the women’s heptathlon discipline.

The last-minute resurgence helped the Army team overtake Hanoi to top the medal tally with eight golds, six silvers and nine bronzes.

The tournament is an important warm-up for Vietnamese athletes ahead of the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines later this year.

The capital team finished as the runner-up winning seven gold, 11 silver and five bronze medals, while hosts HCM City ended up in third place with six golds, five silvers and three bronzes.

Despite winning just three events, the Da Nang delegation accounted for three of the tournament’s seven new national records.

Race-walker Nguyen Thanh Ngung broke his own record (1:36:40) in the men’s 20,000m distance, clocking a time of 1:36:09, while his sister, Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc, also smashed her own record (52:07.93) in the women’s 10,000m race-walking event with a time of 50:39.746. Do Tan Truong set up a new record in the men’s hammer throw with a distance of 55.17m, 0.07m father than the record he previously set himself.

Sprinter Le Tu Chinh (C) remains invincible in the women's 100m and 200m dash events.

The remaining four new national records were established by Ka Hoa (Ninh Thuan) in the women’s shot put (14.75m); Tran Thi Duyen, Dinh Thi Bich, Pham Thi Ngot and Bui Thi Ngan (Nam Dinh) in the women’s 4x800m relay (8:50.83); Nguyen Tien Trong (the Army team) in the men’s long jump (7.98m); and Vo Ngoc Huy, Hoang Manh Cuong, Lanh Van Cuong and Ngan Ngoc Nghia (the People’s Public Security team) in the men’s 4x100m relay (40.44 seconds).

Reigning SEA Games champion Le Tu Chinh remained invincible in the women’s 100m and 200m dash events, bagging home two gold medals for HCM City with respective times of 11.67 and 23.79 seconds. Given her stable form, Chinh continues to be one of Vietnam’s gold-medal hopes at the upcoming 30th SEA Games in the Philippines.

The 2019 National Track and Field Championships brought together nearly 400 athletes from 49 delegations nationwide. It was considered an important warm-up for Vietnamese athletes ahead of the largest regional sporting event of the year, slated for late November.
