Supporting women for successful startups
The 500-square metre shopping bags factory of Nguyen Thi Ngan (born in 1973) in Hung Dao village, Dong Lo commune, Hiep Hoa district is always busy in enthusiastic working atmosphere. Most of the workers here are local women with specific tasks.

After getting married in 1993, Ngan studied garment then opened a tailor shop at her house. In 2006, she established a private company named “Ngan Dai shopping bags Company Limited”. Then, she was advised by the women’s union of Hiep Hoa district to approach the preferential loans for expansion of the production.
In the beginning, Ngan encountered numerous difficulties due to the product errors and unstable consumption channels. Thanks to her hard work and dynamism, the factory has created jobs for 30 labourers at average income from 4 million to 7 million VND (172- 302 USD) per month.
Da Mai Safe Agricultural, Vermicelli and Cake Trading and Production Cooperative (Da Mai cooperative) in Bac Giang city lures more than 40 member households in production.
In 2019, the Cooperative was lent 420 million VND (18,122 USD) of preferential loan by the provincial women’s union and the Bank for Social Policies. Each member of the Cooperative could borrow from 30 million to 70 million VND (1,300 to 3,000 USD) to invest in production facilities.
The Cooperative gained big success in producing dried vermicelli. According to Chairwoman of the communal women’s union Luong Thi Dien, the Cooperative produces about 2,000 tonnes of dried vermicelli each month and supply on order to the markets in the province and other localities including Bac Ninh, Quang Ninh and Hanoi.

Thanks to supporting activities of the women’s union and local government at all levels since 2017, 904 women in the entire province have been lent more than 40 billion VND (1,725 USD) and more than 1,400 women have been supported in business registration procedures and goods consumption. 22 women’s production models have been supported in trademark establishment, traceability stamps and product labelling. |
According to Pham Thi Hang, Vice Chairwoman of the provincial women’s union, the provincial women’s union directed the grassroots-level unions to recommend the local government taking some measures to implement the scheme to support women’s startups such as providing vocational training and training programmes on human resources and finance management, policies and business law to members of the women’s union.
The women’s union at all levels is required to review and make the list of women with startup initiatives to register and organize supporting activities based on the members’ needs. Besides, they collaborate with some competent agencies in the province to support women with startup initiatives in legal documents and business establishment procedures.

The activities launched by the women’s union at all levels to support women’s startups have helped women to gain economic independence, approach production techniques and affirm their position in the society.
