Swimmer Anh Vien seals Olympic place for third time
A letter from the FINA was delivered to the Vietnam Aquatic Sports Association (VASA) on the morning of July 2 about the case of Anh Vien.
Specifically, the Vietnamese swimming ace will compete in the women’s 200m and 800m freestyle events at the Tokyo Games. According to FIFA regulations, each nation with an athlete meeting Olympic A standard is awarded an Olympic slot for another athlete of the opposite sex.
This is the third time that Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien has booked her place in the Olympic arena. |
Earlier, top male swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang qualified for the Games with the A standard in the men’s 800m and 1,500m freestyle. Therefore, Anh Vien has been granted a ticket to Tokyo as she satisfies many of the B standards in the qualification campaign.
This is the third consecutive time the Can Tho-born swimmer has qualified for the world’s largest multisport event. At the 2012 London Olympics, Anh Vien represented Vietnam in the women’s 200m backstroke and 400m medley categories. Four years later, in Rio de Janeiro, she vied for medals in the 200m medley, 400m medley and 400m freestyle events.
Alongside swimming, Vietnam has received an invitation from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to compete in shooting at the coming Tokyo Olympics.
The IOC offered a slot to one Vietnamese athlete in the men’s 10m air pistol category and asked the Vietnam Shooting Federation (VSF) to send an outstanding or well-known marksman to the Games this July.
After consideration, reigning Olympic champion in the event, Hoang Xuan Vinh, was chosen by the VSF for the slot.
So far, Vietnam has booked 16 places in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, thanks to Truong Thi Kim Tuyen (taekwondo), Nguyen Huy Hoang, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (swimming), Le Thanh Tung, Dinh Phuong Thanh (gymnastics), Nguyen Van Duong, Nguyen Thi Tam (boxing), Nguyen Tien Minh, Nguyen Thuy Linh (badminton), Do Thi Anh Nguyet, Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu (archery), Luong Thi Thao / Dinh Thi Hao (rowing), Thach Kim Tuan, Vuong Thi Huyen, Hoang Thi Duyen (weightlifting), Quach Thi Lan (athletics), and Hoang Xuan Vinh (shooting).
