Vietnam elected vice president of UN General Assembly

Vietnam has been elected vice president of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), representing the Asia-Pacific region for a one-year term.

The votes were cast at a meeting Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Hungarian Ambassador Csaba Korosi was elected president of the 77th session of the UNGA, and Vietnam one among several vice presidents, representing the Asia-Pacific region. Vietnam's one-year term would commence Sep. 13.

The other vice presidents are Benin, Burundi, Kenya, Mauritania, Niger, Zimbabwe, Malaysia, Nepal, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Chile, El Salvador, Jamaica, Estonia, Israel and Australia.

Previously, Vietnam was also elected as a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council for the 2020-2021 term.

The UNGA is one of six principal organs of the U.N., the only one with representatives from all member states. It serves as the representative and policymaking body of the U.N.
