Australia started pressing right from the start but Rhyan Grant only opened the score in the 43rd minute from a header.

Both teams entered the second half with changes aimed to strengthen the offense, but Australia failed to create many threats against Vietnam while the latter lacked accuracy in their many chances.

The score remained 0-1 until the last minute.

Vietnam are in the final World Cup qualification round for the first time in history, facing opponents who stand higher in FIFA rankings. They have earned no points after two games, the first being a 1-3 loss against Saudi Arabia.
