Over 800 local residents join a mass yoga performance at the Vinh Phuc Provincial Square in Vinh Yen City on June 24, 2017.

According to Shri Sushil Prasad, First Secretary at the India Embassy in Hanoi, his embassy this year have been supporting International Day of Yoga events being organised by the provinces of Quang Ninh, Vinh Phuc, Ninh Thuan, Phu Yen, and Thanh Hoa at different locations from June 21-28.

The 6th International Day of Yoga is celebrated under the theme “Yoga from Home”, Shri Sushil Prasad informed, adding that the Indian Embassy has been promoting yoga through an online model.

In the run up to the event, the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre has been organising a series of online yoga related activities, including webinars on “yoga asanas” and “Ayurveda and best daily lifestyle practices”.

In addition, a video blogging contest themed “My Life My Yoga” was also launched in late May. Participants from Vietnam performing yoga asanas from their respective areas are required to upload their videos on the embassy’s social media platforms.

The three best videos will receive attractive prizes from the embassy. These videos will also be considered for the global contest being organised by the Indian Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy. The closing date for entries has now been extended up to June 21.

A yoga event being organised by Quang Ninh Province on 21 June at the iconic Ha Long Bay will be live streamed on the embassy’s social media platforms in order to broadcast the event virtually to thousands of yoga enthusiasts and encourage them to join in the celebrations remotely.

As one of the five localities hosting the 6th International Day of Yoga this year, Vinh Phuc has planned a series of events to celebrate the day, according to Deputy Head of Vinh Phuc Provincial Department of Foreign Affairs Khuat Van Khanh.

He added that as Covid-19 has been brought under control in Vietnam, Vinh Phuc wants to host this event to show local efforts in successfully wiping out the epidemic and welcoming more tourists.

Ngo Thi Thanh Tam, Marketing Director of Bao Viet Insurance said that her company has helped the event for the last five years in Vietnam. So far, the International Day of Yoga has attracted over 25,000 Vietnamese people taking part in mass yoga performances, in addition to over 10,000 people joining other activities.

The event is an opportunity to disseminate to the community the usefulness of practicing yoga for the public health, contributing to improving the spiritual and physical life of local people. At the same time, it is also a good chance for yoga lovers to exchange, perform and learn together.

The United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014. The declaration came after the call for the adoption of June 21 as International Day of Yoga by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014.
