Vietnam records 40th coronavirus death

A 70-year-old woman with diabetes in Hanoi has become Vietnam's 40th coronavirus death and the fifth fatality confirmed amid the nation's latest wave.

The woman was treated at Hanoi's National Hospital for Tropical Diseases. She had diabetes for 21 years and had complications resulting from a stroke, causing weakness in one half of her body, according to the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.

On May 3, she was admitted to the hospital due to hypertension, fever, diabetes and complications from a stroke. She tested positive for the coronavirus on May 5 and was put on ventilators and ECMO, among other treatments.

But her condition worsened and she passed away on Thursday. Her causes of death were Covid-19, septic shock along with underlying conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

More than three weeks into the latest wave, Vietnam has had 1,786 cases in 30 cities and provinces and five deaths, all of whom were patients at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, a frontline hospital for the Covid-19 fight. One of its branches in Dong Anh District has been locked down since May 5 as it was revealed to be a major coronavirus hotspot.

Earlier the country had recorded 35 coronavirus deaths during the outbreak in Da Nang in July and August last year.
