Vietnam records 43rd coronavirus death

Vietnam recorded its 43rd coronavirus death in Hanoi Monday morning, bring the fatality tally in Vietnam's latest Covid-19 wave to eight.

The deceased patient is a 50-year-old man who had cirrhosis after being an alcoholic for years, according to the Ministry of Health.

He had a high fever, shivers and digestive problems in mid-April. He was later found infected with the multi-drug resistant Ochrobactrum anthropi bacteria by the Hai Duong General Hospital in the eponymous northern province. He was treated with antibiotics, but his condition did not improve.

He was later transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi on April 25, where he was diagnosed with blood sepsis and cirrhosis.

On May 5 he tested positive with the coronavirus.

He has been put on ventilators and ECMO, among other treatments. But his condition worsened and he experienced septic shock, hemorrhaging in his digestive system as well as multiple organ failure.

He passed away on Sunday night. His causes of death include Covid-19, septic shock, multiple organ failure and blood sepsis.

Vietnam has recorded 2,221 local Covid-19 cases in 30 cities and provinces since the new wave started on April 27.

Of the eight deaths in this new wave, seven were patients at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, a frontline hospital for the Covid-19 fight. One of its branches in Dong Anh District has been locked down since May 5 as it was revealed to be a major coronavirus hotspot. The other fatality was recorded in Da Nang.

Earlier during the second wave in Da Nang in July and August last year, the country had recorded 35 coronavirus deaths.
