Vietnam star midfielder scores first goal for French club

Updated: 20:25, 09/07/2022
Nguyen Quang Hai was in the starting lineup and scored one goal in Pau FC’s 5-0 victory over Landes Friday.

Hai played as a right-winger in this game. His highlight was a cut inside in the penalty area that curled in to double the lead for Pau FC in the 23rd minute, seven minutes after striker Mons Bassouamina opened the scoring. He also contributed to the third goal with a header that started an attack for midfielder Paul Meliande to score.

Pau FC head coach Didier Tholot also assigned Hai to take freekicks. However, none of the three freekicks he took in the first half turned into a goal.

Not only active in attacks, Hai also supported the defense. At the end of the first half, Hai was subbed out since coach Tholot wanted to give a chance to every player in the friendly. The game ended with a 5-0 win for Pau FC.

Hai signed a two-year contract with Pau FC on June 30, becoming the first Vietnamese player to play in a professional football league in France.

After this game, Pau will continue their pre-season tour of France, playing Ligue 1 club Toulouse on July 12 and lower-tier clubs Angoulême Charente and Chamois Niortais on July 15 and 23.
