La Baule World Cup is one of the eight Grand Prix stages under the official competition system of the Union Mondiale de Billiard (UMB). The 2018 version of the tournament will bring together 149 competitors, including most of the world’s leading cueists at present.

Vietnamese cueist Tran Quyet Chien is currently the world's no. 8 in the carom 3-cushion category.

Vietnam is being represented by Tran Quyet Chien (world no. 8), Nguyen Quoc Nguyen (world no. 9), Ngo Dinh Nai (world no. 18), Ma Minh Cam (world no. 25), Duong Anh Vu (world no. 27), Ma Xuan Cuong (world no. 31), Do Nguyen Trung Hau (world no. 59), and Nguyen Duc Anh Chien (world no. 74).

Accordingly, Quyet Chien and Quoc Nguyen are named among the top 14 seeds in La Baule, while the remaining Vietnamese representatives must attend the qualifying round to seek berths in the knockout stage.

The World Cup event offers 80 bonus points for the champion, 54 points for the runner-up, 38 points for the semifinalists, 26 points for the quarterfinalists, 16 points for the Round of 16 participants, and eight points for the Round of 32 participants.

With their respective points of 243 and 241 in the world 3-Cushion rankings, Quyet Chien and Quoc Nguyen will be able to make the world’s top three if either of them takes the top honor at the La Baule event, because the current world no. 3, Kim Hang-jik, only has 304 points.

Last year, Vietnam’s Ma Xuan Cuong produced a “seismic” advance into the semifinals. Breaking through the qualification, the 36-year-old cueist then overcame former world champions Marco Zanetti (Round of 32) and Choi Sung-won (Round of 16), and the 2015 runner-up, Kang Dong-Koong in the quarterfinals.
