Lunar New Year (or Tet) is Vietnam’s most significant annual holiday and one of two peak seasons for domestic tourism.
According to surveys, holiday travel demand remains high, particularly for domestic tourism. 94% of Vietnamese expressed interest in domestic travel, while 97% planned international trips.
Domestic tourism is expected to see a sharp surge in February, while outbound travel tends to be planned for after Tet, with March showing an increase in demand for international travel.
Regarding trip types, domestic travel primarily consists of self-planned journeys, leading to direct spending at destinations. For outbound trips, Vietnamese travellers prefer package tours, with 44% choosing this option.
The average duration for domestic trips is 3-4 nights, whilst international trips are longer at 5-6 nights.
Spending levels show significant variation. The average cost for domestic travel is 13.9 million VND (551 USD), while international travel commands a much higher expenditure, at 37 million VND (1466 USD) per trip.
This disparity reflects Vietnamese travellers’ willingness to spend more on international trips, particularly during Tet.
Tet holiday travel is typically undertaken with family or relatives, with 46% of domestic travellers choosing to travel with multi-generational family groups.
Similarly, travelling with family or partners is more common for outbound travel.
Solo travel is less popular during Tet, representing a small percentage of domestic and international trips.
