Updated: 15:04, 28/08/2019
Located in Thai Lai hamlet, Hoa Nhon commune, Hoa Vang district, the 200-year-old Tich Thien Duong is the only remaining ancient house left in Da Nang city, in which traditional Vietnamese ancient architecture is still kept intact.

Situated amidst a lush garden full of fruits and trees in Tuy Loan village, Tich Thien Duong represents the connection between the past and present, between time-honoured cultural value and modern life.

The house’s owner, Do Huu Minh, has tried his best to preserve the house with his whole-hearted efforts in order to prevent it from deteriorating as time goes by.

Peaceful and relaxed is the common feeling among visitors when they enter Tich Thien Duong. The house consists of three compartments and two lean-tos. Its roof was covered with imbrex and tegula roof tiles.

The house is supported by 36 large jackfruit wood-made pillars, which were carved and decorated by skilled craftspeople from Kim Bong carpentry village (Quang Nam province).

According to Minh, the house was built by his great grandfather around two centuries ago. Although time can change everything, the house still stands the test of time. It is not only his birthplace it also reminds him much about his grandfather and father.

80-year-old Nguyen Thi Hue, Minh’s mother, said with pride that the house used to serve as the worship place of the family and the shelter for many revolutionary soldiers during wartime, including those fighting in Quang Da battlefield. The house was still kept intact despite bombing ranges.

Hue was presented with the Resistance Order, second class in 1986 as recognition of the Party and State for her contribution to the national resistance war against the US.

A horizontal lacquered board was hung at the centre of the house with three Han (Chinese script) word saying ‘Tich Thien Duong’, which conveys the teaching of the house’s ancestors to their descendants: accumulating good works and being kind with others.

In an effort to promote culture and heritage-based tourism, Da Nang city’s authorities is calling for investment to develop the Cam Le - Tuy Loan - Thai Lai riverway with Tich Thien Duong ancient house being eyed as a destination for visitors.
