Overcome all challenges

In the afternoon of November 15, the lesson of Vietnamese language in class 2B at Que Nham Primary School in Tan Yen district, Bac Giang province was so exciting when all the students read the poem “Cay xoai cua ong em (The mango tree of my grandfather)” written by author Doan Gioi. Listening to the teacher’s question, Nguyen Thuy Anh (born in 2005) and Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy (born in 2008) used their little hands to touch the Braille then gave the answers.

Gently coming to their sides, teacher Than Thi Thuy introduced that Nguyen Thuy Anh comes from Long Son commune (Son Dong district) and Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy resides at Duc Giang commune (Yen Dung district). Though they are 3 to 6 years older than other classmates, the class is always full of solidarity and lovingness.

Teacher Thuy shared: “Being in charge of a class with disabled students, I know that my work will be much harder, so I always try my best on every single task. At first, there were several difficulties when I lacked skill and my students were unconfident. Putting myself into their position, I deeply understand their disadvantages. Thus, I keep in my mind that before teaching the knowledge to them, I should be their friends to instruct them from the smallest thing. Sometimes I act as a psychological consultant to give them advice so as to ease their homesick feeling or to overcome the challenges in life”.

Teaching to the normal student is hard and teaching to students with the disability at “2 in 1” integration class is much harder because of the unequal ability to receive the knowledge. To help Thuy Anh and Thanh Thuy catch up with their classmates, teacher Thuy usually gives them more instruction at the end of the class lesson.

Apart from the applicable syllabus, she has searched further teaching skill for disabled students via books, newspapers and colleagues to mix the separate agenda suitably as well as arrange the class lesson and extracurricular activities for them to play and integrate with the collective.

Que Nham Primary School has been selected as the integration education facility for the blind students in the province by the provincial Association for the Blind since the academic year 2009 – 2010. The teachers always play two roles of teacher and relative to support the special students. This year, the school welcomed 9 students with the disability, including 4 blind students and 5 others with movement disability and mental disorder.

Bac Giang has over 46,000 ethnic students and 1,800 disabled students at the educational facilities. To help them access to the knowledge and pursue a brighter future, every day, thousands of teachers at branch schools, special and integration educational facilities devote themselves to the career and overcome numerous challenges and difficulties.

“In the difficult areas, the families have many children. A lot of students drop the Secondary school to work for a living. So, we are happy if they go to school regularly and know how to read, write as well as understand the basic knowledge” shared Nguyen Thi Thao, the Principal at Son Hai Primary School (Luc Ngan district).

Though the expectation of Principal Thao and many teachers in the remote areas is so simple, it is really hard to realize because this area has a high rate of poor households with the majority of ethnic people.

Recalling the memory, Principal Thao said in emotion: “The local students’ parents give us a true esteem. Despite they lack food and clothes, on the teachers’ day, they present us a small quantity of sticky rice grew on the mountainous field, some fishes caught in the spring or vegetables grew in the garden. The plain gifts which fully convey the sincere emotion from the parents and students inspire us to overcome all difficulties to attach to the class and school”.
