Yen The seeks way to export late ripening longan

(BGO) – Tapping soil and climate advantages, Yen The district (Bac Giang province) has paid attention to expanding the late ripening longan area and helping enhance farmers’income.  

High productivity and good quality

Dong Tam commune develops about 30 hectares of late ripening longan, mostly Mien Thiet variety following VietGAP procedure. It is the major crop which is oriented by local authority toward sustainable agriculture development. This year, the commune expects to harvest about 200 tonnes of longan, up 30 tonnes against last year quantity.

Dong Ky commune grows some 60 hectares of longan, 90 percent of which are late ripening one mostly in Dong Lan village. Now, the commune has two longan growing area codes (GAC) covering 10 hectares to export to the US and China.

This kind of longan is ripe 30 to 40 days later than others. Though the fruits are kept on tree in longer period of time, the quality remains unchaged. The selling price is 20 to 30 percent higher than that of main season fruit.

Now, Yen The has nearly 460 hectares of longan, nearly 50 percent of which are late ripening variety.

Developing commodity product

Though the economic value of late ripening longan is affirmed, the product has no specific trademark, hence yet to approach big consumption markets, especially supermarket system in Hanoi, Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh city. Meanwhile, the product is not competitive due to restricted introduction and promotion.

To promote the development of Yen The late ripening longan, create new way for agriculture production, protect and develop the trademark, the Soil and Fertilizers Research Institute (Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences) in May 2020 implemented the project to build and manage certified brand “Yen The late ripening longan” for late ripening longan in Yen The district in two years.

The district will futher direct to support the construction of intensive production model of high quality longan and establishment of cooperatives; actively conduct trade promotion event to draw more companies to link and consume product on both domestic and foreign markets. The competent agencies should enhance management and supervision by taking samples for analyzing to public the quality criteria to gain the customers’belief; diversify the distribution and consumption channels at domestic market, export and local processing facilities.

The project aimed to prepare registration document of certified brand “Yen The late ripening longan” which is registered for protection to help enhance the commodity value, affirm the quality and trademark, enhance competitiveness on the market.

In May 2022, the Soil and Fertilizers Research Institute, Department of Science and Technology, Yen The district People’s Committee held a ceremony to announce and hand over the protection certificate to certify “Yen The late ripening longan” to 20 organizations and individuals in the district.

Longan is defined as one of key crops in the Resolution of the district Party Committee’s Congress and specific resolution of the district Party Committee about sustainable agriculture development in the period 2021 – 2025.

The district oriented to build and expand the concentrated production area with advantage soil condition, especially the riverside area of Thuong and Soi rivers while focusing on improving the quality to create value commodity product without massive production.

Vice Chairman of the district People’s Committee Than Minh Sam said the district will futher direct to support the construction of intensive production model of high quality longan and establishment of cooperatives; actively conduct trade promotion event to draw more companies to link and consume product on both domestic and foreign markets.

The competent agencies should enhance management and supervision by taking samples for analyzing to public the quality criteria to gain the customers’belief; diversify the distribution and consumption channels at domestic market, export and local processing facilities.

At the same time, the functional organization should support the cooperatives and production households with certified brand in term of stamp, label and package to bring the product on electronic platforms.

In the middle of August 2022, the district People’s Committee plans to organize a meeting to announce the longan production area in line with VietGAP standard and departure ceremony to export longan.

The event is the chance to promote and introduce the product; attract businesses to join the linkage and expand the consumption market, hence helping increase economic value for farmers and boost up district socio-economic growth.

Currently, some enterprises have planned and inked contracts to buy Yen The late ripening longan to export to Republic of Korea and Australia. The district People’s Committee proposed competent agencies to complete procedure to grant growing area code for households in some communes to export the late ripening longan to the US and Australia.

Son La exports 20 tonnes of fresh longan to Europe and UK
The northern mountainous province of Son La held an event on July 23 to export 20 tonnes of fresh longan to Europe and the UK, and another 8 tonnes of dried longan flesh to China.
Hai Duong exports first batch of longan to the US, Europe and Singapore
Chi Linh city in Hai Duong province held aceremony to harvest longan for export and ship the first three tonnes of longan to the US, Europe and Singapore on July 22.
Bac Giang has 1,500 tonnes of longan for export
(BGO) – According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), this year, Bac Giang province continues enjoying a bumper longan harvest season. To enhance the value and assist farmers in consuming the product smoothly, the Department attracted businesses to survey and link to export longan.
