Agriculture sticks to its role as economy’s pedestal
In recognition of the important role of agriculture in the cause of industrialization and modernization, the master plan of Bac Giang province in 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050 defined to develop agriculture towards modernization and sustainability, focusing on production with high productivity, quality, effectiveness and competitiveness based on development of high- tech, smart and clean agriculture. Bac Giang is aimed to become a key province of agricultural development nationwide, leading the northern region.

In the last 10 years, the province has implemented a number of practical measures and policies for agricultural development. Up to present, 163 large rice field cultivating models and 5,159 hectares of vegetable growing areas have been established in the province. 66 cultivation areas with 2,027 hectares met VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards. Thus, Bac Giang’s agriculture continues to reap significant achievements and results.
By the end of 2020 and after 10 year-period (2010-2019), the major targets of agricultural sector reached and exceeded the set goals. In 2020, the production value of the sector achieved 36.5 trillion VND (1.584 billion USD), surpassing 10 percent against the plan. The production value on 1 hectare of agricultural land is higher than the national average rate at 120 million VND (5,206 USD), up 14.3 percent and exceeding 9.1 percent against the plan. Several types of farm products like lychee meet the standards to export to Australia, US, EU and Japan.
Agricultural development has been a driving force to boost implementation of the National Target Programme on building new-style rural areas in the province. As of 2020, 124 communes met the new-style rural area standards, accounting for 67.4 percent of the total commune and 3 districts were recognized new-style rural districts including Viet Yen, Lang Giang and Tan Yen district. 8 communes met the criteria on advanced and exemplary new-style rural areas and 73 villages were recognized exemplary new-style rural areas.
The one commune one product programme has gained many significant results. Bac Giang has secured the top position among the northern mountainous provinces in building new-style rural areas.
Agriculture has affirmed its role as the economy’ pedestal by strongly ensuring at-site food security, creating livelihood, jobs and stable incomes for rural people, renewing the rural face and improving infrastructure of traffic, irrigation, culture, health and education while the rate of poor households has been reduced and people’s living standard has been enhanced making important contribution to stabilizing and developing socio-political and economic conditions.

In order to achieve the set targets in the provincial master plan, Bac Giang needs to continue strongly renewing the growth model, of which restructuring the agricultural sector by promoting the potentials and advantages of the province based on increasing productivity and quality of farm produce, high quality human resources, science, technology and competitive capacity.
Besides, it is necessary to develop household and cooperatives economy in which new-style cooperatives and businesses are the core in line with development of processing industry, sustainable connection to the global agricultural value chain to enhance productivity, quality and efficiency in production, response to climate change and environmental protection. New-style rural areas should be built with modern socio-economic infrastructure attached to the new cultural values while strengthening the rural political system.
In addition, it is necessary to change the perception of agricultural production from quantity-based into quality-based production. That means, it needs to focus on agricultural trade rather than agricultural production with the key roles of agricultural enterprises with new and modern technologies and the best matching mechanism and policies to encourage land concentration and investment in science and technology to improve quality and value of farm product attached to the market.
