Bac Giang farmers get rich from lychee

(BGO) – After a farmer named Tru brought first lychee tree to Luc Ngan district in the 1950s, the crop helped change various aspects of the socio-economic life in the highland districts of Bac Giang province.

The provincial Party Committee and People’s Committee determines to develop the economy basing on three pillars of industry, agriculture and service in the orientation of local socio-economic development.

The rural in Bac Giang province has changed dramatically thanks to lychee.

In the agricultural development planning, the provincial People’s Committee persists and specifies the target to maintain and develop the advantage crop and animal by enhancing the quality and value to become provincial staples, including lychee. For over 60 years, lychee has been attached to the land as the pride of local people.

After acknowledging the good development of lychee on the land and climate of Luc Ngan district as well as its high economic value to help local people escape from poverty and earn more income, the Party and authorities at all levels focused on communicating and calling for people to expand lychee growing area.

Bac Giang province has had policies to invest and upgrade the living standard for people in mountainous area and ethnic groups. The rural economic exchange has been improved gradually and developed positively. Step by step, lychee has proved for its importance as the proud of local people.

Together with Luc Ngan district, lychee has helped improve and upgrade the appearance of rural economy and trade exchange in several districts of Tan Yen, Yen The, Luc Nam among others.

Defining its economic benefit, local authority in the districts have communicated, transferred advanced technology, build intensive and safe cultivation models in line with VietGAP standard...while guiding farmers to use safe plant protection products with appropriate period of isolation to ensure the food safety and hygiene.

Several safe production models have been realized together with linkage group of households and technology and science application at large lychee growing areas so as to increase the product quality and develop key crop cultivation hub.

Lychee helps farmers get rich

Bac Giang is a mountainous province with nine districts and one city, including six mountainous and one highland districts, 230 communes, towns, ward, 182 mountainous communes (47 highland ones). The province houses 20 ethnic minority groups mostly in 135 communes and towns in six mountainous and highland districts of Luc Nam, Luc Ngan, Son Dong, Lang Giang, Tan Yen and Yen The.

Luan Van Lot, a Nung ethnic man in highland commune of Kien Thanh (Luc Ngan district) shared his family has about 700 lychee trees with productivity of 20 tonnes. With the selling price of 8,000 – 15,000 VND per kg, annually he earns about 300 million VND which helps improve the living standard, pay for bank loan and escape from the poverty.

Similarly, family of Dang Van Ngu in Phuc Hoa commune, Tan Yen district used to be a poor family. Since growing 400 lychee trees, he has been supported by local competent agencies to well take care of the crop, helping earn over 200 million VND per year.

Thanks to the special fruit tree, many families in Bac Giang province escaped from poverty and developed the economy toward improved living standard.

“The treasure” brought by farmer named Tru years ago truly gives sweet fruit today.
