Bac Giang helps farmers get rich
New varieties, high yield
In the winter-spring crop, Nguyen Huu Thuan and 49 other households in Tien La village, Duc Giang commune (Yen Dung district) grew high quality pure rice varieties J02 and QR15 using Tien Nong fertilizer on a total area of 27.3 ha.

Thuan said that the households participating in the model were provided with money to buy seeds and cover part of fertilizer costs, as well as intensive farming techniques. The rice yield averaged over 270 kg per sao (1 sao = 360 sq.m), an increase of more than 40kg per sao compared to the BC15 rice variety and more than 60kg per sao compared to the KD18 variety that he had grown before.
Currently, the J02 and QR15 varieties are priced at 8,600 VND per kg, while the BC-15 and KD18 cost from 6,500 to 8,000 VND per kg. Thus, farmers earn a profit nearly double that of the old rice varieties on the same unit of area.
According to Nguyen Van Nhat, Deputy Director of the provincial Center for Vocational Training and Farmer Support, the model of growing the pure rice varieties J02 and QR15 in Duc Giang commune is one of the nine models of the same kind that the center has cooperated with the Vietnam Seed and High-tech Agricultural Material Joint Stock Company and the Tien Nong Industrial & Agricultural Joint Stock Company (Tien Nong Company) to implement in the province in the winter-spring crop 2020.
As many as 152 households in the communes: Dong Son (Bac Giang city), Duc Giang (Yen Dung district), Dao My (Lang Giang district), Bac Ly (Hiep Hoa district), Viet Tien (Viet Yen district), Que Nham, Ngoc Thien (Tan Yen district); Hong Ky (Yen The district) and Bao Son (Luc Nam district) have participated in the model on a total area of 49.6ha.
With the outstanding advantages, many localities in the province have registered to continue taking part in the model in the next crop. Of which, Yen Dung district registered nearly 30ha and Yen The 55ha.
Multiplying models
Along with the intensive farming of new rice varieties, the centre has carried out a number of models such as growing vegetables for processing in Hiep Hoa, sweet corn in Tan Yen, and intensive fish farming up to biosafety standards in Lao Ho and Dong Viet communes (Yen Dung). These models have gained many results.

Since 2016, the centre has joined hands with Tien Nong Company to provide fertilizer with deferred payment for households in the province. Field conferences on cultivation of J02, QR15 rice varieties using Tien Nong fertilizer have been held, with over 500 officials and farmer union members attending.
The centre’s introduction of the new and high-yield varieties, development of biosafety production models as well as provision of later-paid fertilizer have initially shown positive results, helping farmers feel secure in production and bringing high income to them.
From this success, in the coming time, the Standing Board of the provincial Farmer Union will continue to direct the Center for Vocational Training and Farmer Support to coordinate with local authorities in replicating effective models and building pilot models of growing a number of new, high-yield and high-quality varieties at the center. The models will be vivid examples for union members and farmers to visit and follow.
