Bac Giang seeks to improve traceability of farm produce

Updated: 20:09, 10/07/2019
(BGO)- In order to heighten competitiveness of the products, stamping traceability is considered the evidence for origin and quality of the products. However, it has not been paid due attention by consumers and enterprises in Bac Giang province.

The traceability stamp on agricultural product will help to clarify its origin with QR code (digital stamp) under supervision of the state management agencies. Only with a smart device, consumers can scan the QR code to identify the products with information of production place, farming procedures, date of harvesting and related certificates (if any).

Many consumers do not pay attention to traceability stamps as buying goods.

In deed, only the key agricultural products of the province have been stamped for traceability. This type of stamp is not widely used in commodity circulation but only used for a small number of agricultural products consumed in supermarkets and big stores.

For example, Hop Duc star apple production and consumption cooperative in Hop Duc commune, Tan Yen district has been partly funded by the district government to make stamps for origin traceability. However, not many members of this cooperative use the stamps.

Although it is a key product of the province, a small volume of vegetable of Da Mai cooperative, Bac Giang city sold in Co.opmart Bac Giang has been stamped traceability.

Not only producers but also consumers have not paid due attention to this issue especially those who get familiar to buying products in the traditional markets. When they shop in supermarkets, they feel assured that the products have been tested so they often ignore the stamps for origin traceability.

According to Nguyen Van Tho, Vice Director of the Center for Industry Encouragement and Trade Promotion, Department of Industry and Trade, stamping for product’ origin traceability brings great benefits which plays as a warranty card for quality of the products.

To encourage this activity, the provincial People’s Committee spends annual budget to support implementation of the Scheme “The model of agricultural production and consumption chain linkage in Bac Giang province in the period from 2017 to 2018 and 2018 to 2020”. Accordingly, 15 key agricultural products including mushroom, lychee, pork, Chu rice noodle and safe vegetables benefit this program.

In line with support for machines, science and technology transfer and trade promotion, each unit is funded 50 million VND (2,150 USD) for stamping and labelling. Besides, the agricultural restructuring scheme and one commune one product program in the period from 2018 to 2020 with a vision to 2030 also focus on trade brand establishment, packing, labelling and traceability for farm produce towards consumption chain.

Some districts spend budget to help producers make stamp for traceability to improve quality of the products. Particularly, Tan Yen district spent nearly 200 million VND (8,627 USD) to support stamping for Phuc Hoa early ripen lychee, guava and star apple.

In coming time, the Department of Industry and Trade and related agencies will continue fulfilling the provincial schemes to enhance efficiency and quality of the commodity. In which, they will spend budget to support the units and enterprises in using traceability stamps while boosting propaganda to raise people’s awareness of benefits of labelling and using products with traceability stamps.
